For the sake of conversation: What if Lavin had stayed
« on: March 28, 2016, 06:49:11 PM »
Wouldn't classify myself as a "Lavin Guy" but I also never really had a problem with him as a coach. Under achieved...sure. But still had us pretty competitive throughout his time here.

Curious to hear opinions as to what "it could have been" had Lavin stayed and Mully never came on board.

-Would Jordan and Obekpa had stayed on?
-Samir Doughty would have been ineligible
-Brandon Sampson would have been on the team

-Deshawn Freeman (Rutgers) and Sammy Barnes Thompkins (BC) were commits right?  (They played last year on two major
programs that might of had worse seasons than we did)

-Adonis DeLaRosa would be on the team...i guess?

We may or may not have still gotten Lovett and Mussini.

What do you guys think?

-Edit-
I should probably mention that I am a fan of the Mullin Hire, and I'm 100% behind him and what he can do for the program,

Returnees would have been Myles Stewart, Jay Henderson, Christian Jones, Amer Ali and Adonis De la Rosa. Would Obekpa have come back after living an episode of "Oz" in the locker room shower, brought to you by the De La Rosa brothers?

Brandon Sampson would be here. Maybe Deshawn Freeman. Maybe Mussini. Doughty and Lovett would still be ineligible. No way Jordan could come back, he stopped going to school in Spring semester.

Starting five of Adonis, CJ, Stewart, Sampson  and, I guess, Deshawn. I don't know about that crew.

We would have had Deshawn, Sampson, and Mussini. Lovett and Doughty may have redshirt, Lovett for sure.
Would have had either Obekpa or De La Rosa, probably De La Rosa.
Also would have landed Yakwe and it was a very high probability that Diallo would have signed as well.

2016 we may have very well brought in Ponds and Ahmed as we were recruiting them.

Lavin may have gotten lazy, but he was still one of the best recruiters. KOB said he was in the room for many in home visits and no one was better than Lavin, including Cal. He would have brought in talent, no doubt about that. This was going to be a rebuilding year regardless, but it wasn't going to be as bad as some may have thought. Lavin is not Jarvis or Roberts, we might not have liked his recruiting style, but he would have brought in talent. That being said I was ready for change, and liked the Mullin hire.

Ha I sense there is more to that post, Moose.  Or are you strictly speaking about the type of recruiting force they might have been together?

No I'm serious. Lavin was lazy as hell at the end. Matt is a hustler.

As much as I despise him, there's a chance we would have been marginally better this season.
But, Jordan would've been inelidgible and gone regardless.  And who knows if Obekpa failed a team drug test or an ncaa test.  He may have been suspended anyway.

The only what if game I play with Lavin is what-if  he had grabbed any one or two of the big rings he was reaching for?  A kyle anderson, Whitehead, Mccullough, Briscoe etc

I think he would still have a job at sju.  And Harrison would've left school with at least 1 ncaa tournament win.  Maybe a sweet 16 appearance.

We were going to suck with or with out him this year.  At least now, when we sucked, I believe we are headed in the right direction because the staff is putting us in a position to achieve sooner than later.  After 5 years with Lavin being this bad, can anyone really believe it would get better?  Not me.  Next year when we are better it will be an improvement and most likely making the NIT.  Got tired of making the NIT and feeling depressed because we kept under achieving.

Lavin did his job in making us a relevant program again. However he had a pretty low ceiling as no matter how much talent he would bring in his teams would always underachieve because he was clueless on the sidelines. Also we never would have been a consistent winner with Lavin because his recruiting strategy of putting all of his eggs in a just a few baskets would lead to some talentless teams when he struck out on his main targets.

Can the current staff take this program to the next level? Who knows. But Lavin is gone and whether you liked him or hated him, it's time to move on

Between the imaginary recruiting Lavin does as a TV commentator and the imaginary recruiting he did in this post that's a hell of a roster. If all your fantasies and Lavin's had come true do you think his actual recruits Alibegovic and Balamou would have had to transfer or would they have been permitted to walk on.

He would have brought in enough guys to bring us a dozen wins...maybe fifteen.  We'd be back to the youngest team in America mantra. There would have been a number of dramas which would become increasingly excruciating as the season moved on.  We would have been in the mix for some good players in 2016 with posters extolling their tremendous upsides.

I'm not convinced Mullin can coach.  He's shown nothing when it comes to teaching defense.  Some of this year's losses against sub-par teams were chilling.  He's bringing in good players, but whiffing on five stars.  We may never achieve relevance again.

On the other hand, he'll never be accused of being lazy.  He'll keep us on the map by the weight of his personality as did Looie. There won't be big time drama.  We'll enjoy the ride as New York City's team more often than not.  We'll compete in the watered down Big East.  Forget Lavin.

Why should we expect to ever land a 5 star recruit? There are only so many to go around, and we're far from one of the top programs in the country, and not even in a power 5 conference. At least we're in the mix with some of the names. We have two of the top recruiters in college basketball, so you know if these kids aren't coming here, it's just not possible to get them here at all. I don't know how the expectation was that we would. I'm just happy that the level of talent being brought in should make us a very good team for the foreseeable future. And there is no lack of hard work here.

As for Mullin, it's clear he's acting more as a GM than a coach. And what's wrong with that? Was Lavin ever known to be an X's an O's guy either?

If Lavin was still here, he would be on a tight leash with President G. All the stories that broke after he left, with transcript issues, and adultery with sex tapes involved. Jordan being ineligible, because he blew off spring semester of classes. What would have happend with CO?

There was plenty of drama around the program before you even got to rebuilding. A lot of this disappeared when Lavin was fired.  Maybe Lavin would have lasted one more year (Let say President G gave him a one year extension).  In the end I think he would have been fired, because he brings to much drama to the program and the new regime would not have put up with it.
