If the guys in the know on this board and Redmen are correct, our roster is basically set for the next two years.
Next year's team will have freshmen Ponds, Freudenberg, and redshirt freshman Lovett. The sophomores are Mussini, Ellison, Yakwe, Sima, and redshirt sophomore Owens. The juniors are JUCO transfer Ahmed and (if healthy) redshirt junior Williams. There are no seniors, although grad transfer Livingston will visit on April 28th and his recruitment is said to be almost a done deal. We are supposedly days away from adding Clark (2 years eligibility remaining) and Simon (3 years) who would have to sit next season and be added to the playing mix in 2017.
If all this happens, barring any transfers out, we would be at least 12 deep for the 2017 season, with one scholarship remaining, and competition for playing time will be fierce. As the team improves, and there is less available open playing time, it becomes harder, not easier, to recruit for 2017. It would take a truly high impact program changing freshman to be guaranteed any significant playing time given our loaded roster.
Of course, most teams settle into an 8 or 9 man rotation, so, invariably, players are going to be left our. Do next year's end of the bench guys transfer out, or do they stay to work hard, improve, and push for more minutes? Does anyone leave to play pro in Europe or to attempt to go pro here? There's so much player movement in college ball today that it's hard to say that everybody stays until graduation.
What is apparent, especially if the staff adds Simon and Clark, is that we are making a stand with the talent we have and that recruitment after this year has to be done very judiciously, with an eye towards filling specific team needs and balancing classes going forward.
