Zendon Hamilton
« on: June 09, 2016, 08:51:05 AM »
Heard yesterday that Zendon Hamilton will not back next season...    hate hearing this.

I thought it was great that they had a former player on the staff and working with players...

This is disaster and a PR nightmare and coming on the heels of rumors of Slice leaving only underscores the mistake the university made by firing a proven winner like Steve Lavin in favor of Mullin who was a pretty good college player who has never coached a day in his life. Hopefully they use the opportunity and replace Zendon with a proven X and O guy like Bobby Knight or Jim Calhoun. I was willing to give Mullin a break when he was hired but we're a full year in and not only haven't seen the results I'd expected but he's clearly demonstrated that being the GM of NBA team does not translate into managing of staff of 6 in the high stakes world of college basketball.

Wasn't he a volunteer coach? You would figure he would only do something like this for so long until he found a job that pays him like an assistant should be paid.

I have no idea what kind of coach he was or was not...    I just thought  it was great to have a former player around the program...

He was caught off guard by the move from what I am told...

He was fired ? If so doesn't make much sense.

It was great to have him on staff.  The guy was a McDonald's All-American and played in the NBA himself. Not too many staffs gets that caliber of volunteer.  It doesn't take a professor to connect the dots on this one.  He obviously was not offered an assistant gig.

They have to have a SJU Grad or ex player as one of there lead recruiters.

They care more about SJU winning than a guy like Slice.

Look at Duke, Cuse and even Seton Hall all have ex players as recruiters and all doing a good job.

As a SJU grad a would like more ex SJU players become involve with the school basketball program.

They would care more about SJU winning then some outsider.

I'm guessing he wasn't a volunteer if he was fired/laid off and I would bet that this is a cost-saving maneuver as they get ready to pay a buyout for Slice.

I don't really understand how the school is on the hook to pay a buyout to Slice when he's the one deciding to leave. Wouldn't the school only have to pay the buyout if he was fired?

I would guess they may not back fill Richmond's slot either when he is moved up. Losing that role is certainly not a big deal & helps a bit financially.

Maybe Mullin and Zendon conversation went something like below?
KRAMER

What did you want to see me about, Mr. Leland?

LELAND

Kramer, I've.. been reviewing your work.. Quite frankly, it stinks.

KRAMER

Well, I ah.. been havin' trouble at home and uh.. I mean, ah, you know, I'll work harder, nights, weekends, whatever it takes..

LELAND

No, no, I don't think that's going to, do it, uh. These reports you handed in. It's almost as if you have no business training at all..

I don't know what this is supposed to be!

KRAMER

Well, I'm uh, just--tryin' to get ahead..

LELAND

Well, I'm sorry. There's just no way that we could keep you on.

KRAMER

I don't even really work here!

LELAND

That's what makes this so difficult.

He has a contract and if they don't want him around, they have to buy him out...
