Early starting lineup will be LoVett, Ellison, Bashir, Yakwe, Sima

Mussini and Owens first off the bench.

Ponds and Freudenberg next in rotation.

Alibegovic spot minutes.

Doubt Williams ever returns. Most likely becomes hardship candidate.

By mid season Mussini getting spot minutes and Lovett, Ellison and Ponds are the 3 guards that play

I think that is the hope. I also think Mussini will be more efficient with less needed out of him.

"Malik Ellison has had a tremendous off season"

When I compared him to DJ Kennedy, I saw some of those skills. Like in how he gets the rack. If he's been hitting the gym, maybe he's ready to be a consistent driver and finisher like DJ was. Also like that he's a really big guard. More than anything his defense has to
Improve. He had no clue how to play defense. That surprised me.

Just wanted to give my 2 cents on Ellison.

My sense (based on nothing) is that Malik's development can become a very important recruiting tool.  And thus, I’m a huge Malik booster and wish him tremendous success this upcoming season.

My hope and expectation is that he continues his progression, which is undeniable, that he showed during last third of the season.  He improved his shooting, his finishing, and also his defense (to an extent).  It would be great if he could earn the starting 2 spot this season and next.  With 2017 being especially tough with Justin Simon being eligible.

Why would he be a recruiting tool?

He is a prototypical NBA sized 2 guard with good athleticism and a quick first step.  I think he was a 2/3* recruit because of injuries and didn’t play against really good competition in HS, but he had all the tools. If he progresses and improves enough to be, say an All BE 2nd teamer or so, other large guards (who needs to improve their outside shooting) would see the value of being coached by Mullin and co.

Isn’t that how Chris recruits?

My sense of how Chris recruits is that he does it like an NBA exec. I think he and Mitch create a player development regime.  They present this and show recruits their strengths and weaknesses and show how they would improve over a couple of years in order to make them attractive enough for NBA execs to take a chance. Lord knows that Lavin and Roberts or Jarvis didn’t do anything like that.  Now that’s all talk on the part of Mullin, but Malik would be an example of what could be achieved.

Anyways, regardless of how he played last year, and I know that a lost of posters are down on him…. I hope Malik makes the jump becomes an effective BE combo guard.

I’ll be rooting for him next season.

I think Malik went from totally out of control, slow and unaware on defense and unable shoot consistently to being able to the bring the ball up against BE players, knocking down a few threes and driving, distributing and finishing with more consistency. He was a freshman. IMO, he had a promising freshman season.

It comes down to just how many areas he can improve in one off season. We know he's been hitting the weight room. That's a surefire example of commitment. He's 6'6, and he's a legit 6'6. Guys like him and Yakwe who scored for us down the stretch need to make that jump in order us to really compete in the BE for the post season. Both players, and Sima and Mussini would make STJ look great for doing what few STJ coaches have been able to do — develop talent.

Good post poison. A promising freshmen season and an obvious physical talent

Ellison has things you can't teach - size, pedigree and confidence - and is deficient in things that can only improve - shooting, defense, ball handling, maturity. Exactly the sort of 4 year player every program needs and all good programs have. The usual stupid geniuses think he should be recruited over because he wasn't an all american as a freshman. It's like they've never watched basketball before.  I'm hoping he's 50 percent less awful than he was last year and if he is I'll be pleased with his progress and looking forward to his future.

He's already 50% less awful than he was when he started here. And frankly, his overall skill set doesn't seem that far off from DJ Kennedy. He wasn't as good as DJ, but he's big enough to play the 2 or the 3, and he does have the ability to get into the lane. DJ always had that ability.

By his junior year, he could be a real player for us, and I really have no idea why people don't think he can't be a star. Kennedy was pretty awful most of the time as a freshman, too. He worked hard and became a star. For this though, I'd be thrilled with improved defense and more consistent finishing on drives to the basket.

Ellison has impressive guard skills but he was a disgusting defender and was incredibly weak on the boards. Comparing him to DJ is not fair to DJ. He makes Ellison look softer than dog shit.

Totally agree Fun.  Would like to see him in a 3 guard rotation with Ponds and Lovett.  We need a big guard and he is the only answer.  Mussini as a 15 minute shooting specialist.  Ellison's most glaring deficiencies, defense and decisionmaking,  should improve substantially with a year and an offseason under his belt.  Not too worried about his outside shooting, the other 3 can bury it.

Agreed. A long way to go to be mentioned withvthe likes of DJ.  Ellison needs to work on going to the hole and making layups. He takes layup like Chris Dudley took free throws

I don't remember DJ looking as lost as Malik was last year. I also don't think Malik will get the same opportunity DJ had. DJ had no one to compete with. Malik has plenty. I think Lovett plays 30 plus minutes a game. Maybe Malik can back him up. Their will only be more competition next year. I think he has already been recruited over.

I don't think he has such a long way to go. Work to do, sure, but last 10/15 games of his freshman year, he was similar to what DJ did as a freshman. I'm a huge DJ fan, but in BE play, he wasn't exactly tearing it up. Every game they played against a ranked team was a 40 point loss.

totally agree. I loved his confidence in getting to the hoop. I think he is going to be a glue guy for us with potential high upside years 3 and 4

I think DJ was better the 1st year but I thought I saw some things in Ellison that to me he could have the same trajectory as DJ

Just my opinion but for a freshman ( while he certainly could throw bricks ) it actually impressed me more how he could get to the hoop. I think the buckets will come but I think getting to the basket efficiently is more than half the battle

A lot of St.John's fans remember the DJ Kennedy who dunked all over Duke, Uconn and Nova, but as a freshman, he got worked by just about every team that even sniffed the tournament. They beat South Florida, Rutgers, Providence and maybe DePaul or a lousy Seton Hall team. That's it.

4 years ago some argued that Felix was going to get better. He probably would have if he was given more of a chance. I am glad he didn't get one. Harrison, Phil, and branch were better. I hope Malik proves me wrong. But I don't think he gets much of an opportunity. I think the other guys are better .

M.E. telegraphs his move, and starts it to far from the hoop. Gets pass off when in trouble and shows that coming also. Those moves are big trouble for a guard. When he loses those habits maybe he can start to develop some guard skills.

Im not sure what to make of your critique, but I will attempt to rebutt...

We didnt have a true pg last season, so our offense started well beyond the 3pt line.
Malik was the only player who consistently beat his defender off the dribble and got to the rack, although he didnt finish consistently.
And i dont think theres much deception necessary in a penetrate and kick offense. Although i understand the problem of leaving your feet too soon.

I dont think this is whats holding him back.

What's it like to be so shallow that you think a teenager should be deprived of an opportunity to better himself so that you can wear your stupid Saint John's hat proudly on the subway. And you're allegedly a teacher. The mind boggles.
