Lovett, ponds, ellison, ahmed, yakwe

Ellison would really have to step up his physicality and rebounding to pull that off. I love small lineups. Hopefully Bash and the MSU transfer will bring that more of that out of him.

I love small lineups if theyre your best lineup. I'd start Sima

Sima was a liability last year in the BE. I mean, everyone was, but he has a long way to go before he deserves to start. If he's able to defend his position, move faster and think faster offensively he should start, but Yakwe was leagues better than him when he filled in at center last year.

Evan Daniels at practice today:

Evan Daniels ‏@EvanDaniels  13m13 minutes ago
At St. John's watching practice. They be much improved this season. They have a young team, but some very talented pieces.

Evan Daniels ‏@EvanDaniels  7m7 minutes ago
Bashir Ahmed will be a breakout player in the Big East. Impressive 6-6 versatile forward. Can really score. Tough, physical & aggressive.

Evan Daniels ‏@EvanDaniels  2m2 minutes ago
Chris Mullin said Shamorie Ponds is ahead of schedule. The 6-1 guard is likely to start next to Marcus Lovett. Will play PG & SG.

Barring a 3 guard lineup, this is the first news of what we have been speculating all offseason- Moose now coming off the bench.

You're not keeping Ponds off the court for too long. I'd expect him to be the best backcourt defender from day one. The kid will average 2+ steals a game over his career.

All Freshmen backcourt = lowered expectations

It is a freshman backcourt, and it's reasonable to expect some growing pains this year mixed in with clear signs of a promising future. That said, LoVett isn't a freshman in the same sense that Ponds is. He's had a year in the weight room, practicing with the team and being coached by Mullin and his staff. We know that's not the same as game experience, but it makes a difference.

True, all Freshman backcourt is a recipe for problems. Unfortunately, we didn't get a nice transfer PG to take some minutes/pressure off Lovett/Ponds. Moose and Ellison are a year older, but sophomores nonetheless. Hopefully with the further development of in-game coaching, the backcourt will play beyond its expectations in Big East play.

Think of Simon as a college 2/3 that can handle the ball a bit.

Although he has nice size, which we could definitely use at the 2. I was under the impression  his skill set is more suited for a PG. But I hope your right w Lovett and Ponds at the 1 and Ponds and Simon at the 2 plus Ellison, we should be in excellent shape w our guards.I could be wrong, but I get the feeling Mussini will be in Italy next year. He's not making the NBA, might as well start making money.

I think you're see Ponds start at the 2 for the next 4 years. Simon comes off the pine.

Lovett is going to be one nasty s.o.b. He's one of those talents that will only be limited by himself. I don't see a PG or even combo when I look at Simon. I see a SG that can't shoot very well that is probably best suited for an attacking wing role.

Make all the mistakes this year, learn and get some big game experience.  Expectations will be huge for 17-18

Will be huge? They are huge.

The verdict on Mullin's coaching will be determined on whether we make the tourney that year. Theres no question he can recruit.  The big question is can he coach and bring the team together?  If he can, itll be all puppies and rainbows for the foreseable future!

Its also Bash's last year in the program, so Id like to see him do some damage.

What happens if St Johns doesn't get the invite in 17-18?

Lets see how 16-17 is first and worry about next year - later.

Maybe they will surprise people this year.

Can't rule anything out for this year in either direction. I have no expectations but would not be shocked if this team danced.
