I completely understand where the seeding lands, 8th is a safe, strategic pick for most of the coaches. Thing is, we're loaded w talent, and everyone knows it. It's an interesting storyline heading into these practice weeks, tempered expectations but we could breakout at any moment. 10 deep as CM put it today, I think we finish 4th and are a year ahead of the curve.

Admire your optimism, but I think your expectations are higher than staff's. :) Pray LoVett is healthy most of the year, being the only true PG in my opinion.

I think we'll take our bumps in the OOC, but by the time the BE round robin starts we'll be ready to compete and break out.

So Bethune Cookman will handle us. And we break out against Nova?

That's not even funny, talk to me when you're ready to discuss this season maturely. CM aligned a pretty solid OOC schedule, should produce a good RPI. November brings @Minnesota, Michigan St./VCU or Baylor on neutral floor. December has nice tests with @Tulane, Penn St. and @Cuse. I like how battle tested they'll be heading into the BE season and think that they'll peak during the course of it.

I like your optimism too, and I agree the talent is there.
I think we'll finish lower in the standings because the team is too young to be consistent.
We might have top 5 talent, and maybe there will be nights we play like it.
But too many fresh and sophs to think we'll be consistent.

Where do you get top 5 talent? We haven't had that since Erick Barkley and Rob Artest played here. Best case scenario is we play like we have top 50 talent on our best day.

Think he meant top 5 in Big East

Oh, oops. My bad.

Getting a home win against butler to start BE play would be huge for these guys. Depaul in game 2..
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

Billy Garrett sucks
Sickle Cell Disease will do that to a player...

I wouldnt have had him as a 2d teamer.  He can only play 20 min a game max.

Any All BE potential on our squad?
RF, Lovett, Ponds, Bash, Yakwe?

I think Yakwe can be a 1st teamer, absolutely should be a 2nd teamer. All depends on our PG play

Not disagreeing, but he would need to develop his offensive repertoire (had to check spelling), which I think will happen with this staff. Maybe some post moves and def would need a go-to move. He has all the physical tools.

Without seeing Lovett or Ponds in any games yet, I would think that Ellison has the most straightforward linear path to be an All BE type player. He has the size, skills, and confidence. He just needs to make that jump and put it all together and do it consistently, game in game out.  If he doesnt, Simon is taking his minutes next year.

Freud easily has the potential to be all BE next year, this year would be a stretch.  I think by mid-season he will begin to look like an excellent 3.

RF, Owens, Sima, AA, and Bash are a lot of guys to cut into his minutes. I see him at 22
or so mpg.

My lingering memory of Derian is him taking Lovett out in the Red White game.   Smh.

Let Derian play for the JV squad on Staten Island.

Let him at least have the courtesy of correct spelling.

Why such a focus on our injury prone 11th man?

Because some touted him as the second coming w out ever seeing him play.

@JonRothstein: Will be instant starter RT @ECoastBias: St. John's lands Darien Williams. #sjubb http://t.co/lej6Bvxcwg

@JonRothstein: Several college coaches believe the gem of St. John's recruiting class is JUCO import Darien Williams. Think Jonathan Holmes. #sjubb

Not sure it's worth belaboring like you have been.  He was "touted" as a "starter" on the worst team in school history and the "gem" of a recruiting class that was formed in less than 4 months.  Then he re-injured a surgically-repaired shoulder after a just a few games.

He was never the gem of the class. That would undoubtedly be Yakwe. What Williams was, and what he represents is a culture of hyperbol that always sets up programs like ours for disappointment. No one even saw this kid play, but that didn't people from hyping him up into the next Walter Berry. When will the lesson be learned?

Yakwe was not yet in the fold when Rothstein made those reports.

Literally no one said he'd be the next Walter Berry.  I'm not even sure if anyone suggested he would be an all league caliber player. The hyperbole seems to be your reaction.

In any event, I can't see this kid playing meaningful minutes this year.  I hope Mullin keeps the rotation tight despite our depth.

One never knows. We have not seen him healthy. If he can retain his health , he may be a better player than many think. We really needed him last year, this year, not so much.

don't know how long it will last, but loving the true round robin.  just received tickets today, and great to see every conference opponent once in person.  OOC will be tough especially since all of the legit teams are on the road (they really should try to get at least one marquee OOC game at the garden every year...)

Your tickets arrived already Apes?
