Actually thought that all our kids last year played their tails off and gave a crap.  They were just limited in various respects, particularly on the defensive end.

As for Amar, who knows.  Seems like a great kid to have on the team for the reason you and others stated.  If he can give us the occasional offensive burst off the bench when needed, and continue to be a great team guy, that is fine by me as I don't see him getting much PT unless he really improves on the defensive end (where he is a major liability).  But upperclassmen have shocked us before, so who knows.

Wish this thread didn't get derailed by Sheppy nonsense. Please more on the Tip Off. I heard it was great.

Can't wait for the preseason game in two weeks. We back.

After 1 B.E. win last year, I wouldn't say we're back yet. Are we headed in the right direction? No doubt about it.
But we'll be very young this year, and I can't say the 15-17 wins is being back.

We'll all know when we are back. Cause it will look like this:
Top10, 22-24 wins, maybe to the championship game in the B.E tourny, atleast making the 2nd week of the NCAA.

And that is when we are back.
Possibly next year we could see that. I'm gonna enjoy this year and the growing pains.  We'll see some nice upset wins that will have us thinking that yeah maybe we are back, then some bad losses that will bring us back to reality that yep they are still very young.

Meant "we back" as in, the season is back.

I thought the kids looked a little nervous and rightfully so. That atmosphere was something I've never seen before at St. John's. I was hyped.

I thought the guys played with more intensity than I expected. Defense wasn't absent.

Individually I thought Lovett looked like Lovett. He's gonna handle the ball better than anyone could last season. He'll make some amazing plays and he'll have a few head scratchers. I'm hoping the good outweighs the bad. Additionally I'm hoping guys play with ready hands because he'll whip some passes in tight spaces.

Mussini looks very comfortable doing what he does. His pull up looks like an instant replay every time. That's a sign of repetition. He's also so good at laying the ball in. I'm hoping the added weight will help him finish absorbing contact.

Yakwe releases the ball higher than Sima. It's crazy he plays like a 7 footer. He's gonna be a consistent 7,7,3.

Amar isn't expected to crack rotation but I have a feeling he's gonna find his way on the floor. I really don't mind seeing him pull the trigger from the outside. He's also added on size. A mature body down low is gonna be needed. The other thing is the kid plays with energy all the time. Great spark plug to have.

Elijah Holifield grew maybe 3 in. He'll never see the floor but great practice body. He can be a tremendous asset playing scout team.

Sima looked like Sima

Richard Freudenberg was a lot taller than I expected. His stroke is pure. Game is a little fast for him right now but damn the potential is there. Need to put him in positions to succeed and develop confidence early on.

Shamorie Ponds didn't show off his ability to score. I thought he did a great job of passing and being a pest on defense. I loved to see his interaction with teammates too. Lovett, Mussini, Ellison were all bro'ing it up.

Tariq Owens looked bigger and he can potentially be a good energy guy. I'm hopeful they'll use him sparingly because I think he'll be more efficient in short sprints and he'll get sloppy in extended minutes.

Justin Simon and Marvin Clark will be impact players next year.

Thanks Dave. That was pretty thorough. What was your take on Bashir Ahmed? What kind of a player do you see him being?

I still have never been to one of these.  Perhaps it's time to start going.
As big a rap fan as yourself has never been to MM?  ;) :)

Surprising right?  When it comes to rap - I'm way way old school:

I go to St. John's University
And since kinde-garten I acquired the knowledge
And after 12th grade I went straight to college"

Ya know I forgot about Bashir. It's my first time seeing him and he's different than I expected.

He was less athlete and more bull. I think he's gonna be get a lot of 3 point plays in the paint. Kind of reminded me of a healthy Rob Thomas. His jump shot was obviously pretty broke. Sideways release with a hitch but that's ok because I think he's gonna make his living driving to the hoop. There are plenty of shooters to complement his skill set. Want to see some more of him because I clearly couldn't get a full handle on what he can bring to the table.

Side note for whatever it's worth he was the last name announced at the rally. All the other new players were announced first. He was last and the entire team went out to center court to greet him. Gives me the impression he is regarded as a leader of this team already.

Nice analysis.  Simon and Clark looked really good.

Our best bet would be to stick with eight players with the others finding minutes in laughers.  Lovett is as good as advertised.  20 wins isn't far fetched with him at the point.  Mussini also impressed.  He and Amar look much improved.  As long as we keep Mussini off the point, he'll be great.  Amar had a strong resemblance to the guy who showed up at the Syracuse game.

Yakwe is a stud.  He should keep Sima on the bench until his game catches up with him.

Ponds is also a stud.  Bashir looked good...not great as advertised.  Freudenberg will need time.  Right now he's Hooper with better skills.  Williams looks good enough to earn minutes.  Same with Owens.

The team will be a lot better if they run plays rather than chucking up threes.  Leave that to Amar, Mussini and Freudenberg.  ONLY.

I also hope the team is working on free throws.  I'm surprised Freudenberg missed one of two... I hope it's not a portend of what we can expect.  I see top half of the Big East and 20+ wins if they hit free throws and chuck fewer threes.

In my opinion Yakwee and Sima are playing different positions.  But maybe that's just me.
Sima and Owens are the only centers on the roster.

I think small ball is best lineup this team can run. Bashir + Yakwe can play extended minutes at 4/5 and be a matchup problem.

Sima will be needed and can play meaningful minutes but won't be needed at all times.

I think Mullin mentioned "10 guys" a couple of times on BE media day.  Which 2 players are getting squeezed out of the rotation?  Has to be at least 1 of Williams, Amar, Owens

It would have to be Williams and Amar that don't really sniff the rotation. Owens is a true big that can play and you don't keep guys like that on the bench.

Would bet at least one of those 2 wont be around next year.
