I wonder why he left his adopted family. 

To me it seems like it went all downhill after that. Was the trigger for him leaving, the meeting with his birth family that was facilitated by the Vice documentary?  In it, everyone was saying NBA NBA, and the aunt seemed to resent that others were getting credit for raising him.  Anyway, a sad story and turn of events.
