Seton Hall - Player of the Game
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:07:02 PM »
I mentioned this in the game thread (as did Dinkins) but wow, we are really lucky to have Lovett.  He is a special talent, and if he sticks around the team next year will be very promising.

All around great game from Marcus.  Very efficient offensively (7-12, 5-6 from ft line, and just 1 turnover!), and he should've had 2-3 more assists if Yakwe and Owens couldve finished.

Owens and LoVett were both great, went with Owens for blocks and boards and for him 10 points is like Lovett getting about 28. But the real POG was Ellison for getting in early foul trouble and not playing for his 30 plus minutes because if he did we probably lose the Game IMO. He was totally out to lunch in first half-terrible D, Multiple TOs, missing shots.

Mullin has shown he will play the guys who are playing well.  Look at how guys like Yawke or Williams minutes have fluctuated at times.  Same would have been true for Ellison today.  Sure, he would have played more if he didn't get hurt, because of his size against the Hall guards/wings and because he has had some pretty good games.  But he would not have gotten the usual burn if he wasn't performing.

I give it to Owens today because I think he was the biggest factor in negating the Hall's primary advantage.  Yawke gets a +1 too for a great effort on this front.  Of course Lovett was excellent and Ponds made some big buckets down the stretch.

Maybe, but Ellison seems to be teacher's pet. More often than not in the forty plus years I have followed ST J's there is usually one player who plays a lot more than I would wish and Ellison is that guy for me. Sure he has improved over last year and maybe he continues to improve and be an asset. He seems to have concentration issues and it is his mindless TOs that drive me nuts like today's short pass to the wing which was so slow and lazy it was easily picked off.

At first glance, Owens and Lovett were a flip of coin for me, but went with Owens for sheer hustle and having a part in not allowing Delgado to eat us up.

I did as well. To win, we needed to contain Delgado, and Owens stood his ground inside. He was great with help defense after Delgado dumped it off. If Owens can somehow get stronger, lookout.

Voted for Marcus but some serious consideration has to go to Ali Ali. Guy hit some big timely shots today to keep them away from the door. This from a guy who hasn't moved off the bench for 3 games

This should be 100% vote for Owens. All of his blocks are on otherwise chippie layups and dunks and that block on a layup and then alley oop slam on the other end turned the momentum for good.  He outrebounded Delgado and his hustle is a back-breaker to his opponents.

When the hall were making a run in the second half and their fans were up and chanting Shamorie hit two key baskets on two straight trips to get the lead back up to double digits and shift the old mo back in our favor.  Lot of guys played well but to me that was the key.

Owens hands down and it's not because Lovett wasn't amazing,  he's nearly always amazing.  This game, Owens had a winning impact with points, boards and blocks.  Doesn't diminish what Lovett does,  but he does that weekly.  "Player of the game" is the guy that provided so,thing extra today to get the win, and I think Owens did that.

So why did our best player not start in this game?

Really close between Owens and Lovett for me but considering how much we were dominated down low last time against the hall, nod goes to Owens.

Its not an accident. He works his tail off. If we don't loose anyone , I think Owens w another 20 pounds and Clark, Bash and Yakwe. , we will look much better next year w our inside game. A grad transfer will would also improve things.
