Big East Awards
« on: February 19, 2017, 09:15:15 PM »
Foster's 35 spot tonight made me think of starting another BE end of year awards thread.

First team:  Hart, Brunson, Delgado, Foster, Bluett and Pryor

All freshman team - Patton, Ponds, Lovett, Dante, Howard, Baldwin

POY - Hart

COY - Wright

ROY - Ponds

Thoughts?

I think DPOY may be Owens.  Is there anyone else who could take it from him?

I believe I had Brunson on Baldi's All Big East team before the season started

Not hating on Owens . He is my favorite player. He has played some great games. Way more to playing defense then blocking shots. Their had to be someone in conference who plays better defense.

we will probably have the league leader in blocks and steals and we are the worse defensive team in the league.  shows you how meaningless those stats really are. Thomas DPOY.

I agree.  Owens may get it eventually but his D is really not very good yet, shot blocking is only a small part of D.  Wesley Unseld was a great defensive player and rarely blocked a shot.  Whoops, dating myself once again.

If Cooley somehow sneaks this group into the NCAA Tournament he should be COY and they should name the arena after him

A good point, but I doubt they get in.  Frankly, I see them finishing up behind us in the standings.

He's done a great job this year.  He was criticized last year for not doing more with a squad that had most of the big contributors on the current roster plus two NBA draft picks (including a lottery pick).  Shows the benefit of continuity and have upperclassmen who develop in a program, like Cartwright, Lindsey and Bullock.

I don't think blocks and steals are irrelevant by any means.  I think it shows that blocks/steals in and of themselves are not indicative of a good defensive team.  Combine blocks and steals with better overall defense and protecting of the back board, and you are on to something.

Actually, he's doing what he was predicted to do, and that's to finish 8th in the conference.  Whether, that's great or not is subjective.  There are still more games to be played, and they could end up finishing higher than expected.  As, I stated a few minutes ago, I have the Friars finishing behind us when it's all said and done.

Good point.  I was going by my own preseason view on how they'd be.

How can Ponds be ROY?  He's the second best rookie on his own team.

I thought Lovett wasn't eligible?  Either way, I think it is a close argument between them (if Lovett is eligible) and Patton.

Patton.

Patton doesn't block shots, rebound, or play d at an elite level.

I disagree. He's top 6 in the BE in rebounding, Top 4 in blocked shots and even top 20 in steals. Not to mention his presence when guys come into the lane.  And his footwork for a 7 footer is impressive enough that he can pick up guards on D switches.

I'd say he's pretty elite in the BE.

He plays under 25mpg. His per 40 is somewhere around 22, 10, 2, 3.

He also shoots 70% from the floor.

Patton's FG% is a very deceiving stat, credited mostly to easy put backs and dunks. DeAndre Jordan leads the NBA in FG% at 69%, yet his FT% is at 50%. Very similar to Patton, 69% FG, 53% FT. He should stay one more year, put on additional weight, and keep improving. He could be Top5 next year, although he was terrific seeing him in person in Queens, I really think he could benefit by staying.
