Game 31: Providence

I don't like him, but he's done a nice job at Providence overall.  If he's underappreciated, it's because folks may not realize that.  But let's not make him out to be Gregg Marshall.  Let's remember he has 1 NCAA tournament victory in 5 years, and I think he underachieved last year with a squad that had a top 5 pick and another NBA player to boot, plus most of the main contributors on this team.  But 4 years in the dance in a row for them is very solid

If we lose to G'town we will finish the season on an ugly 4 game losing streak with 2 of the games coming at MSG. Granted 7 BE wins a major improvement but need to win next game to avoid leaving season with a sour taste.

Cooley is certainly a good coach, IMO.  I just have a hunch he has a ceiling to what he can accomplish.  Especially,  at Providence.

Back to our team....  I've said for awhile to not surmise more talent will automatically catapult us up the conference rankings.  LSU and Georgetown are prime examples when it comes to that scenario.

We need a veteran college coach as an assistant ASAP or we may see similar play a season from now.

Providence is not an easy place to win and to go to 4 NCAA tournaments in a row there is pretty remarkable in today's college basketball. It's amazing that he's going to take this year's team to the tournament

Can't agree more regarding needing better coaching otherwise the talent coming in won't make much of a difference. We can't go into next season without adding an experienced X's and O's guys to the bench and another big

Maybe, maybe not.  His first 5 years weren't altogether different than Lavin's first 5 years examining the whole body of work.

No doubt, goredmen.  As I said, he's done a nice job there.  Think he underachieved last year, but this is easily his best season from a coaching perspective.

Maybe we need to get someone.  Maybe Mullin & Co. continue to progress as coaches, as many have over the years, especially once they have a solid pipeline of players, limited roster turnover, and can roll out a mixed bag of good upperclassmen and young players.  Jury is still out.

Agreed! Team is going no where next year with same staff.  Plain and simple, they are putrid. It's not about today, or last game or talent, they lack the fundamentals of being a quality coaching staff.  Today's team, looked uninspired and really could care less about winning. Mullin is too busy talking to refs about arm bars and phantom fouls, instead of getting in Guys faces for playground shots and coast to coast turnovers:

It doesn't sound weird AT ALL. It is a sign that we weren't a very good team to put it mildly. I know all about being more competitive but you can't just say it we have to do things to make it happen.

The team  played the game as if they were all hungover.  Horrible game to be at.
Need consistency next year.

They had 18 assists we had 6.  We were clearly out coached today.  I'm very high on Cooley as a coach but I still have faith Mullin can turn it around next year.  Defense will be the key to being consistently competitive. Simon should help but we still need another solid big man.

Agreed.

Mullin seemed very frustrated in the post game.  Agree with everything he said but low energy/lack of intensity or whatever you want to call it has been a problem all year. Coaching staff has to be accountable for that.
