17/18 Expectations
« on: April 02, 2017, 10:17:42 AM »
Middle of Big East....maybe bubble team? Does that make sense?  Suppose we get an eligible transfer big who'd be a medium Big East talent?

If we get a grad transfer big, that's where I expect us to be.

Ceiling is NCAA bid, basement should be NIT. But at the same time, not sure what to expect from Simon and Clark at this point

I think the Nit requires a team to be 500 in conference. The BE is so deep, you can usually expect at least 5 bids. Just about impossible for a BE team to be invited to NIT w that rule. It's either NCAA or bust.

Could be wron, but I don't think that's a rule anymore. Georgia Tech was 8-10 in conference

I could live with an NIT appearance, and think that is most realistic. But If Simon turns out to be the real deal. A backcourt of Ponds, LoVett, and Simon would be pretty difficult to slow down. I think the tournament is a possibility.

That's correct, as that rule isn't in place any longer.

Let's wait to see what kind of big we land in the next month or so before prognosticating. That's going to be a major factor of next season's success or lack thereof

Conference record rule was never in place.   You are thinking of overall record being .500.  '89 SJU was 6-10 in the BE and won the NIT.

Year 3 was always the critical year.  The roster has the makings of being good and perhaps even better depending on who they land.

This is the year they need to take a step forward, no question. If they're not a bubble team slash NIT lock the next logical step is to burn Carnesecca to the ground and sow salt where it once stood.

I don't care who they bring in barring a top five stud.  This team will straddle .500 into infinity if no one teaches defense.

.500 record at least in the Big East and between 18 and 20 wins overall.  The strength of the Big East in its out of conference games will determine whether that's good enough to warrant a bid or bubble status for the NCAAs.

Year 3, expectation has to be NCAA bid.  Didn't make the change to mullin to wait four years to make the tournament. Should make the tournament in year three and be consistently in the mix going forward. To do that they'll need to make a big leap in the front court and in coaching (both sides of the ball). Hopefully the coaching and the roster both take a big step forward.

The NCAAs at the very least should be the expectation. That was the expectation with Roberts and Lavin. Roberts had NCAA penalties to overcome. Lavin had to replace 10 seniors. Mullin's beginning wasn't without its challenges, too.

So, fair is fair. Mullin will have everyone that he wants to return back. He'll have two eligible transfers from top programs plus two all league quality players already in the program. That's more than at least half the BE will be bringing back and bringing in. Unless there are injuries or mid season pussies who quit in December, I think they should make it into the field of 64.

The NIT should definitely be the minimum of expectations for next season regardless of if/who we land on the grad transfer market. If we get a really solid big there's no reason to accept anything less than the big boy tournament. This year should be the start of the NCAA Tournament being the expectation every single season
