Game 5: Oregon St.
« on: November 20, 2017, 11:20:43 AM »
--Oregon St., fresh off a thrashing of fellow Advocare team Long Beach St., has two main scorers that are bigs above 6'8 and will test our height issues a lot more more than Nebraska ever did.

--HC Wayne Tinkle's son, Tres, at 6'8 hit three 3's against LBSt. and grabbed 14 rebounds against Wyoming. He's currently averaging 21/8. I would tend to think that Mullin will put Clark on him early.

--The Beavers run their offense through big man Drew Eubanks. Listed at 6'10/250, he's a formidable presence down low, posting 26/11 on LBSt. over the wknd.

Drew Eubanks said he knew there wasn't anyone long enough or strong enough to bang down low with him.

"My teammates put me in a good position and I just finished at the rim," he said.

"Big boy was a load down inside. They didn't have an answer for him," Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle said.

--I'm thinking that Tariq will see his first start of the season bc of the Eubanks matchup. Unlike Nebraska, Oregon St. runs their offense through their bigs. Eubanks and Tinkle both played 35+ minutes against LBSt.

--Eubanks is a big boy at 6'10/250, I'm also thinking that Amar will be seeing important minutes not only to give Tariq/Marv breathers, but also eat up fouls and get physical with these guys in a effort to combat their height and strength. We will be tested down low for sure on Thanksgiving.

We have a choice of strength (Clark) or length (Owens) or a combination of the two in Yakwe, although Yakwe has to show us more than 10 good minutes before he’s given a chance to handle a guy like Eubanks.

I wonder if they don’t put Simon on him? IMO the most surprising aspect of last Thursday’s game was seeing Simon rip the ball out the hands of the Nebraska bigs. That guy can rebound. He could average 8 a game or more.

Sadly I agree we will need an Amar sighting in this tournament. This is not a good team. If we are anywhere close to being good. We need to win.
Also I don’t think we should change anything. It’s working. Let them try and guard us.

My concern about this squad is, how will they defend against skilled bigs?

Nebraska didnt have any skilled bigs. And as a poor 3 point shooting team, almost half their shots were 3s.  They did themselves no favors.

Or St. fan board lamenting the lack of a PG and declining defense.

We see their size as a challenge and it is but can they keep with ponds, Lovett, Simon and Ahmed? They should be worried about that. I'm looking forward to this game. Owens will need to come up big but we need to continue to play to our strengths.

I'm thinking that Tariq will see his first start of the season

Chris isn't going to change up what has him at 3 and 0.  He's not a "shock and awe" starting lineup guy like Hollywood was.

This is about matchups. Eubanks declared for the draft last year, he's legit. He's a brute 6'10/250, why would we risk foul trouble and a early deficit if we have the means in Tariq to guard him properly out the gate?

Based on Oregon State bd seems as if you have to pack it in (zone - something we don't play) and dare them to beat you from the outside.  Collapse on the bigs.

Their board is complaining of lack of PG. Then why not full court pressure, atleast until the under 16minute timeout.
If they don't turn it over, then double team Eubanks and make it hard for them to get him the ball.

Get the ball inside on offense, maybe the refs are whistle happy, and we get him in early foul trouble.

We can't start Owens, he's our only legit bigman, rather have him for crunch time.

OSU is doing better defending the weave this half, one thing that is a positive.

Funniest comment!

In this video he’s Tyler Hansbrough.

This kid is about to get blocked 5-6 times...he shows a lot of ball and doesn't seem to pay much attention to help D. Bad news is he uses body well and we don't. Push all game, turn them over, and make them defend our guards.

Amar will get 15-20 minutes of leaning on Eubanks and whacking as needed.

They lost to Wyoming at home...so they're not world beaters.  The game is winnable if the team focuses as they did against Nebraska.

Agreed.  If we move the ball and rebound a little it should be a double digit win.  Our team quickness should destroy their size.
