The new guys have played 196 minutes, versus the returnees' 208.

Sedee Keita and Mikey Dixon aren't new. They've been practicing with Ponds, Simon, Clark and Trimble for over a year. Heron doesn't need to get acclimated to D1 ball.

Nov 27th is the next game I see Roberts and Earlington getting into.

The problem with Rutgers and Cal is that they are horrible losses should we lose, and we’ll get zero credit for winning.

If the strategy is we play cup cakes to get the new guys burn, it’s not working out that way. The returning players still need a ton of work on both ends of the floor.

The point is that this strategy wasn’t very well thought out.

What are you talking about? Some of the people on here are hilarious. Have you ever coached a team? Have you ever scheduled games before? There is ZERO incentive for lots of the big name programs to play St. john's. There is talent here but the record the last decade has been brutal. No one want to lose to us and we have shown that we can beat great teams. It takes TWO teams to schedule. Kansas plays LA Lafayette, Stanford, Wofford and NM State over the next two weeks and they're the #2 team in the country. Why is everyone so focused on this schedule? It's a perfect schedule for this PROGRAM. Forget about this team. The program needs wins. Wins get us in the tournament. Getting in the tournament will bring us players. We play in a great conference and that will carry enough weight when and if this teams earns a spot in March. Jeez.....enjoy the games. Have fun watching our team play.

Dixon needs to get acclimated to playing defense much, much better.

So by new guys you meant the three guys at the end of the bench (9-11) and your complaint is that two games into the season they haven't been fully integrated into their roles, which roles I would assume is considering that they're three freshmen sitting on the bench until their sophomores.

If this season boils down to how well those three guys play this isn't going to be much of a season.

This is a good point especially in the context of a conversation about seeding the tournament. (Nevermind that I think fans of a program that have won one post season game this century who are in November worried about where their first round game is going to be in March are either woefully premature or slightly delusional.) If we're as mediocre as the naysayers say - if we're on the bubble or below - then we're a bad loss for a good team that might otherwise be above the bubble or is worried about their seeding.

Have you coached a D1 college basketball team? If not, it’s puzzling as to why on earth that you’d ask me that question, or anyone that question.

But since you brought it up, know who else hasn’t coached a D1 team before? Our coach.

You said we play in a great conference. Great by what standard? Our two ranked teams. We play in a conference that is better than the A10 and better than the AAC, but nowhere near as strong as the other high major conferences.

People are focused on the schedule, because outside of Duke in Cameron, which we all know isn’t happening, there isn’t one out of conference game on our schedule that will help us on Selection Sunday. There are only games that can hurt us.

We are going to have to count on Roberts and Earlington this year. I think you already know that.

Other BE programs lost 3 or 4 starters and they’re not avoiding challenges early on. Why are we?

We have an All American in our starting line up and we’re sending him to play in Piscataway when he should going to Ann Arbor.

Goodness, I hope not. I hope we're going to have to steal some minutes with those guys when the other guys are unavailable.

I don't know anything about the schedule, why it is what it is or whether it's as bad as everyone says. At least some of the game are tournaments, which I don't think the staff schedules the match ups. The other ones are the same sort of cupcakes we've been beating up on since Lou was here. Should it be stronger? Maybe. Mt St Mary's and Maryland Eastern Shore seem odd choices. I'd much rather play traditional "rivals," like Fordham and Iona. But I'd also rather be 10-2 against weak teams come BE play than 5-7 versus top 20 teams.

Goddamn that was a good post!
We have to be the single worst team to schedule this season. We could win 16 or 28 and we can look like both a 16 or 28 win team in the same week.

Second

https://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/rpi-ranking/rpi-rating-by-conf

The good news: We’re rated 2 in the nation.
The bad news: The CAA is rated 1 in the nation.

The America East, which is consistently awful, is rated 3 in the nation.

Lou didn’t need a challenging non conference schedule. The BE was loaded every season.

So we don’t get crazier yet, let’s table this schedule talk in favor of other topics until we play at Rutgers. Mullin has had plenty of time to review what his team needs to work on. They have talent. Now they need to be coached.

What's funny is that you think you know what this schedule will look like at the end of the year. You don't know if Temple or VCU or Georgia Tech or any team we play will have a great year or a terrible year. There is so much parity in this sport that outside of Duke, it's impossible to guage anything this early in the year. Buffalo is ranked. LSU squeaked by UNC Greensboro.Stony Brook beat South Carolina. TCU beat Cal State Bakersfield by 5. Even Vermont hung around with Kansas for most of the night. The point is that parity makes scheduling hard. Beating Temple is better than losing to UNC or Virginia or Gonzaga.

And I asked the question because unless you've ever had to make a schedule, no matter the sport, you would know how difficult it is. I'm new here, but all I've read from you is how shitty we are. We should lose to Michigan instead of Rutgers....clearly no matter who we play, you think we will lose. And our coaches are terrible. And the fans suck. If we ever win a championship, you'll be guy that says, "Yeah, but we only won by 5." Put a smile on your face and enjoy the games. You can't rate a schedule until the season is over.

The Big East has finished no lower than 4th in Conference RPI since it's inception.  Kenpom has it as the 5th, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 3rd best over the same span.  It has been definitively stronger than every conference other than the Big 12 and the ACC.

You don’t get better by beating up on teams that are struggling much more than you are. How does that prepare you for a league where there are no easy games? Even DePaul is improved.

Rutgers hasn’t made the NCAA tournament in 20 years. In some cases, it’s a safe bet that a team won’t be good. Georgia Tech is rebuilding. They have been rebuilding. No one expects them to break out. Cal was awful last year. They’re expected to be awful again.

The examples you’re bringing up are extreme as well. Buffalo is a ranked MAC team. That’s not so shocking because they waxed Arizona last March.

And how do you think Buffalo got there? Not by scheduling more than 1 or 2 power houses over the last few years, to know that. And those teams don't want to play Buffalo anymore anyway. Buffalo is exactly the right team to bring up. I would love to recruit solid 3 and 4 year kids like them. Making the tournament and playing well in it is a great showcase for juniors and seniors for NBA scouts. Buffalo is a great school to emulate in that regard. You and I agree that Mullin hasn't proved anything yet. The guy is my favorite player of all time, but he can't get the kids to stop drinking the ball everytime they touch it. We should be talking about those things.
