What’s withdrawal deadline?  June 17th?

For guys like Ponds, it should be a few seconds after the Combine list was released

Agree here.  He should have enough data by now to make a fair assessment.
If as stated above, Ponds has work outs scheduled with Celts, Nets, Cle and Det, he should go.  It would give him incite on what he needs to work on if more than the obvious; they would give him experience for the process when he is going through it for "real".  I look at like a student in the business school.  They go on info tours of various companies/have access to career days prior to senior year when they go on interviews for the "real" job.

Ponds is a first round talent and outside shooting is the strongest part of his game. He could shoot near 50% from three if he was a dedicated spot up shooter with a few legitimate guards to set him up. Going off his shooting % last year (and completely ignoring what he did as a freshman) like WASJU is just foolish. You can make the case that his shot selection was awful but that's where it ends. You'll never see a kid take a higher degree of difficulty from deep as he did last year out of nexessity. After Lovett went down we had the worst ball-handling the Big East has ever seen and no inside presence to command a double team. He would go several games between open set shots. He was never given a foot on the perimeter even when his shooting % dipped below 20% briefly.  That should tel you all you need to know.

He's G League bound if he stays in the draft. He needs to work on his defense and PG skills another year while adding ten pounds of muscle.

His basketball IQ, feel for the game, hands, and ability to slow the game down in his mind are truly elite. You don't see kids reacting to defenders and making counter moves at such a high level like him often. The kid has a 10 year NBA career waiting if he does it right and waits.

Agreed.  If he stays 4 years and keeps his head straight he has an NBA future

That's silly. He has workouts scheduled with good teams and that is a chance to impress some decision makers for this year or the future. It's also experience for next year (or the year after 😁) and invaluable feedback. Lovett didn't have any personal workouts scheduled last year.

The invaluable feedback was already given.   He is not a top 70 player in THIS year's draft. Get back to school and your team and get on the same page. Make something of your college career

How could LoVett have any work outs scheduled last year, he didn't enter his name in the draft (not saying any teams would have been interested)?

So you think a smart thing to do for a prospective professional basketball player would be to call the Boston Celtics and say thanks but no thanks to working out for them? Seems smart.

Of course not. But at the same time, what happens if he goes there and Gets eaten up?  How's that look for next year? Prove it on the college level first, on the national stage. Everyone knows he can score. Now he needs to learn the PG position and improve his strength and long distance shooting. He does that and shows it on the court, he gets drafted  next year. Getting your ass busted at a Celtics tryout doesn't improve the situation imo

I think Baldi's point is that Ponds has already used the rule to his advantage. He knows he's not a first round pick, and this just seems like a way to get attention more than a deeper evaluation. What will these NBA teams tell Shamorie that he isn't already aware of?

The NBA has , for several years , looked to select  Athletes who play Basketball, instead of Basketball players who might not fit their prototype size requirements . Players are bigger today at nearly all NBA positions than they were years ago . Additionally , it’s the norm for Scouts to identify players according to their Potential , rather than their College stats . Josh Hart  last year and Brunson this year are great players that might be a bit smaller than would be the NBA standard . The 6 ‘ -6 ‘3 guards are becoming rarer and rarer. Ponds and Family know that and know Shamorie will benefit with another year in which he can and likely will shine . He’s a Special player and fine young Man too.

Josh Hart has prototypical NBA 2 guard size at 6'5. I pretty much agree with the rest of your post though.

Lovett declared without hiring an agent (per his tweets) and then decided to come back when the reception was cold.

When has Ponds ever been chewed up? Workouts are his chance...he's never going to look good on paper. One on one he's schooled Duval, Brunson, made Divencenzo like like a child, and Mustpaha Heron among others. His best chance is to get on the court and school some top 20 kid in front of a GM or coach. At worst he gets feedback on what to work in and can impress with his improvement the next year or two.

I'm his biggest fan and I think he needs another year.

Considering he's using pronouns like "we" and sounds invested in the team, I feel optimistic,

Looks like we all missed Ponds' nickname--his dad calls him "Morie" .  Next year when he scores do we cheer "That's A Morie"?

Shamorie is probably returning to school, but we can’t fault him for staying active in the conversation. He was one of the ten best guards in the country last year, but in high school when it came time for the final top 100, Shamorie wasn’t considered to be one of the elite 5 star talents.

Rawlie Alkins was the All American, and he may even be a draft pick, but there is no question who the better college basketball player is. Shamorie proved many of the analysts wrong two summers ago, so it’s not so far fetched that he believes he can do it again.

I'm happy he's doing these workouts. I think he'll learn a lot. The difference between him and Alkins is size. There was only one combine invite who was 6'1", Aaron Holiday. He averaged 20/6, shot 43% from 3pt, and perhaps most importantly, is the younger brother to NBA players Jrue and Justin.

The guys who are 6'2" are either locks as an NBA lotto pick because of athleticism/skill (Trae Young, Collin Sexton), or incredibly accomplished college guys (Brunson, Graham, and Carter). I think Ponds and his dad are smart enough to realize he'll need to have a consistent 3pt shot and accomplish something at St. John's. I think he can definitely do it.

I agree. I was coming at it from the logic that the scouts used to rank Shamorie out of high school. The analysts were wrong about Shamorie once, and I think their numbering system has just as much to do with the player’s pro prospects as their college readiness.

Ponds needs to get stronger and he needs to continue his development as a point guard. Also, I think he needs to work on his overall leadership skills. If the call doesn’t go your way, you have a valid point, but throwing your arms out and staring down the ref instead of hustling to get back on defense isn’t a quality that a fringe NBA draft pick should be known for.

Strength, vision and maturity and I absolutely think Shamorie will play in the league. I fully expect him to work on all three should he choose to return. The question then is what is the rest of the team doing to prepare for the season?
