St. John's 3rd with Ponds, 5th without him.
Agree. No Ponds shouldn't mean we tank another season and should not be an excuse for finishing at or near the bottom of the conference as we have enough talent without Ponds to at least finish in the 5-7 range with any kind of coaching.

If Ponds leaves we have two pretty up and down BE players and the rest are gambles. Who are the teams we are better than if we finish 5th?

St John's Shamorie Ponds is done with workouts for time being, per his father. Family will sit down this weekend to make a decision. #sjubb

I have not spoken with the kid, his family or anybody close to him recently.  I have my own personal opinion on the situation but that has been debated enough here.  What I can tell you for a FACT is one of the teams he worked out for was blown away about how certain aspects of his game arent EVEN CLOSE to NBA ready. They were actually stunned. Great kid, some very useful skills but from what they said not only wont he be drafted a G-league spot is far from certain.

I hope you're right.  But the way he lights up top, top tier teams defensively focused on him for 40+ as scoring options a, b and c scares me.

I think Marco was implying something else - that our NBA hall of famer staff, who have been selling recruits on being able to get them NBA-ready, have a star player who has "certain aspects of his game [that are not] EVEN CLOSE to NBA ready"

Nah I think Baldi was referring to a dose of reality for Ponds and his current status as a potential pro.

I think the staff has done a good job developing Slick from where he was.

Yeah let's take rumor as fact now. The guy gets less than half his recruiting rumors right and now he's throwing his hat into the NBA scouting ring for the first time? It's complete bullsh*t. This info if it's true at all originated from a low level employee of the Nets and was probably delivered after a lengthy chain of the telephone. Ponds could have scored 20 points a game in the g league this past season and only a complete idiot would think otherwise.

Is it possible that maybe, just maybe, your assessment of Ponds is a bit off? I think if you stop making excuses for his numbers and stop dismissing his limitations, then you wouldn't be so offended with the notion that Ponds isn't ready for the NBA.

No, it's not possible that Shamorie Ponds will ever be in jeopardy of not making a fvcking G league roster. That is literally the dumbest thing ever posted on this board.

Maybe he doesn't go in the first round, maybe he even goes undrafted, but not making the G league? That is not even in the realm of possibilities. SJU79 should have flushed that shit down the toilet instead of posting it.

Absolutely.   It's incredible how people get yelled at sometimes for posting their info.  It will dilute the value of this board if that keeps happening.

I also don’t disagree necessarily about his prospects of making the G league. Ponds is a slender 6 foot guard who shot 25% from 3 last year in college. I think he’s a great college player and has nba potential but if you’re a smaller guard who can’t hit a jump shot consistently there’s not much room in the nba for you. He needs to come back and improve his efficiency to have a shot at sticking in the league.

I'm sure NBA teams are lining up to draft an undersized guard, with negligible PG skills, who shot 25% from 3 and 42% from the field in college..... If he can't shoot a high percentage from 3, or become a lock down defender (which he is not), he literally has no place in today's NBA whatsoever.

How do you figure a guy who averages 5 assists while still getting you 20 points has negligible pg skills? For an undersized guard he rebounds phenomenally well and is a tremendous finisher around the rim. We should be counting our lucky stars he decides to stay for another year.

Who has connections to high school kid rumors and access to NBA personnel while simultaneously being small enough to care about posting about teenagers to a bunch of old men and college kids? I call bullsh*t. Stay in your lane -- your 40% success rate lane. To even repeat such an insane rumor should be beneath the kind of poster many of you think SJU79 is. The last bit of that destroys any credibility the "source" could have.  Shamorie Ponds might not make a league where undrafted Antonio Blakeneny AVERAGES 33 points per game (after averaging under 15 ppg in college)?  A league where multiple St. John's players with half his talent played in? Are you kidding me? That's beyond ridiculous. Look at the bottom of these G league rosters! You have a few two-way contract players who are decent and a handful of delusional former  good collegiate players who should have gone the international route straight out of college, and then pure crap. Ponds could average 10-15 ppg in the G league and still be a colassal failure. Feel free to keep kissing his ass. I'll just stick to the Matt A leaks.

He shot 37.5% as a freshman from three. His release is pure and he just needs a slight mechanical adjustment. I promise you good NBA execs and scouts like Danny Ainge understand why his % went down while his FT % went up unlike many of our fans.
