QUEENS, N.Y. (March 29, 2018) – The St. John’s men’s basketball team will participate in the 2018 Legends Classic next season, which culminates with the championship rounds at Barclays Center on Nov. 19 and 20. The Johnnies will be joined by California, Temple and VCU in Brooklyn for the two-day event that will be carried on the ESPN family of networks. Matchups for the 12th annual tournament will be announced at a later date.
Prior to traveling to Brooklyn, St. John’s will host a pair of regional round games on campus as part of the marquee early-season event. Detroit Mercy, Bowling Green, Hampton and Loyola (Md.) round out the Legends Classic eight-team field and will complete in the subregional rounds.
Out of the three possible opponents heading to Brooklyn, St. John’s has the most history with Temple owning a 32-21 all-time record against the Owls in a series that dates back to 1931. The Johnnies have won five of their past six contests with Temple, including a 55-48 victory in the last meeting on Nov. 29, 2009 in the Philly Hoop Group Classic. The Red Storm has met VCU once before in the 2016 Battle 4 Atlantis, while St. John’s and California never have competed on the hardwood.
