Roster for 2018 - 19
« on: May 15, 2018, 09:29:07 AM »
Does anyone expect a change to the current roster for next season.?

There had been all sort of speculation that Trimble was definitely going to transfer and we had a mystery recruit waiting in the wings.

The school year is a few days from ending.

Do we know if the incoming Freshman recruits will be taking classes when the July summer school sessions begins, we all know this will start their eligibility clock for next season.

Matt said everyone will be in for summer session.

Is this a trick question? Of course someone else is leaving or never showing up.

St. John's summer school starts next week. Told everyone, including all new players but LJ Figueroa, will be there. He'll arrive first week in June. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille
St. John's is still looking to fill one open scholarship for next year. A few options on table. No names yet. #sjubb

The incoming Freshman usually don't take Summer classes until the July session. They might not have yet officially graduated from high school.

No idea why no Figueroa but maybe he has built a good base of credits already at JUCO

Couldnt find anything posted here. But on Redmen.com word is Heron may transfer to SJU.. Now that would be a great use of what hopefully would be our last scoly.

With Ponds Heron Clark Simon and Keita? As our starting 5. With a nice looking bench
With the B.E. down this year, you'd have to think we'd finish in the top 3.
Then 4 of that starting 5 could be gone. So we'll need a huge season next year, for a big 2019 recruiting off season.
Now on the other hand, Ponds hasn't announced yet and Heron hasn't committed yet.
Yeah, it's great to dream but lets see what reality is.

Wouldn't he have to sit a year?  Or is he hoping for a waiver?
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

@MitchellDeAnte
Looks like Shamorie Ponds will go to the wire on his draft decision. According to a scout, his evaluations are improving & likely will stay in the draft #sjubb

Rivals guy that covers SJU and NY apparently

Mustapha Heron would catapult us way up there.  Honestly might be the best backcourt in the country, with depth to match.  Start Ponds and Heron.  Dixon, Williams right behind with Trimble as well.  We’d have Simon and Figueroa splitting time at wing and Simon could play other spots too. Marvin slides to stretch PF role.  This is best thing that can be done with that scholarship, waiver or no waiver... Heron is a real stud.  Next to Ponds, near unstoppable...

If in some crazy world Heron was granted a waiver and came here it really pisses me off that Owens left. Honestly that could have been Final Four worthy team. I know that sounds crazy but seriously that's crazy good.

I liked Owens a lot, but I think Keita can probably hold serve at center..  he’s a big guy with skills  and yes we will be a little smaller and less deep at center, but the rest of the team is excellent and deep.  Hopefully Roberts can also get rolling a bit to spell Keita at times.

Roberts and Earlington are important recruits. They need to be a part of the frontcourt rotation. Roberts seems athletic, but raw. Earlington looks like he can box out and grab a rebound from what I can gather. Ideally, he isn’t putting up threes or 12 foot jumpers on a regular basis. We’ll need his lunch pail game when Keita gets into foul trouble, because he just probably will.

Agree here.  I’d like more height, but it’s not totally necessary for success.  I’m not counting on Earlington who is not taller than Heron.  I’m all for undersized guys like Anthony Glover, but truth is I haven’t seen many guys in the last 20 years his size that could do what he did.  Plus Earlington is more of a perimeter guy from what I’ve seen.  Very little Anthony Glover there.

I don’t know whether Josh Roberts will be ready, but he will have to spell the center spot... he’s 6’10 and very athletic.  Depth-wise he might be our most important player.  We aren’t undersized like we were in the past...

Heron is an excellent rebounding guard too, so that could help cover up some of our front court deficiencies.

I wouldn't say excellent rebounding guard. His rebounding numbers are fairly average, maybe slightly above average for a 3. Nothing spectacular.

I hope the staff really emphasizes rebounding this offseason to Simon and Clark. If Heron comes and is immediately eligible we should always have at least 3 of Keita, Clark, Simon, and Heron on the court at all times. That should be enough to improve our rebounding from terrible to average.

Lets also remember that Owens was a pretty terrible rebounder for a 6-11 kid so that part of his game shouldn't be tough to replace. It's on the staff to get everybody to buy into team rebounding
