I feel for the kid and it's hard to really blame the staff for this one. An Abdul Lewis-like guy would be ideal.

This kid gets seriously injured and then the staff offers him a scholarship? It’s because of incredibly dumb shit like this that the team didn’t have any damn size last year.

Unsurprisingly this is complete BS on multiple levels.

The staff offered him well before his injury. He committed in June of 2016. He got injured in May of 2017, a full 11 months after he committed to St. John's.

He then enrolled at St John's one year early in late August of 2017. This is because the team had a open scholarship they were not going to fill for the 17-18. If you want to blame the staff for that, that's fine, but don't claim that him being on the roster prevented them from getting a big. Had that 13th scholarship been claimed by another player before late August of last year then the staff would not have had Diakite come to SJU a year early.

I don’t give a shit when they offered him. They are f’ing nice persons for still showing even the slightest bit of interest after the injury. He’s f’ing done. A kid that’s two years away from playing, and St.John’s gives him a scholarship. The staff should be fined for doing something so dumb.

The fact that there was even an open scholarship available when the team desperately needed a grad transfer proves without a shadow of doubt that they were unprepared for the season.

The staff is not to blame for giving him a scholarship.  But here is something to chew on, SJU had 3 kids that signed scholarship papers as part of its 2017 class.  Zach Brown, Sid Wilson and Diakite.  Combined they will have played 0 minutes for SJU.  From 1 class.  Whiffing like that on top of missing out on target after top target for 2017 and 2018 is going to rightly bring about criticism.

Better produce this year and next...

I agree. The staff going after Brown in lieu of other options was a huge and avoidable mistake and they deserve all the criticism they get for it and then some. I'm not sure people realize how much that set the program back.

Wilson is a tough case as he was here when the semester started and then left. That also set the program back as he would have been a key bench player for us last season, but to me this one is only partially on the staff as I don't know how they could have handled it any differently.

The staff did 0% wrong in regards to Diakite. He was a top 100 player before the injury. They brought him a year only because they had the scholarship open anyway and now he's leaving hopefully to open the scholarship for somebody that can be used this year. Had they not had an open scholarship in late August of last year it would have been likely that he never stepped foot on campus as a SJU student at all.

Again, there is plenty to criticize the staff about. How they handled Diakite is not one of them.

But getting 3 kids signed and ultimately getting ZERO from them in 1 class bad luck or not is on the staff.  And it goes to the overall recruiting which has been mediocre at best.

Better get this going in 18-19....

Fully agree on Brown..

How was Wilson on Mullin?

It was a shock that we even landed him a few months before. Unlikely there was a close connection built.

I don't think you know what luck actually is. The actual definition of luck is "success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one's own actions". So therefore if you do think anything was bad luck then you can't possibly pin it on the staff. To be fair I don't think it's all been bad luck, far from it honestly. But if there were actual instances of pure bad luck then you literally can't say "that's on the staff".

Anyway, I do agree that this is the make or break year. Despite all of the mistakes, defections and overall mediocre recruiting, the team is well positioned to have a successful season. No excuses to fall back on anymore. Anything less than the NCAA Tournament would be a massive failure and to me would be a sign that this staff will never get this thing going.

Wilson is on Mullin because this is his program, and he should do some f’ing research before he offers a scholarship to a player. It’s a pretty consistent criticism across the board. The staff is lazy.

Excuses after excuses from the same old posters on here. Sidney wilson transfer is most definitely on this staff, lets finally be honest with ourselves. I actually don't have a problem with Diakite leaving because that is a really tough injury to come back from and feel terrible for him, but the staff better get an immediately eligible player to contribute this season.

What?  Diakite is the bad luck.  All 3 are NOT.  Because Brown and Wilson are 100% on the staff.

Too many excuses on here from the Mullin apologists. Bottom line is they are not getting it done on the recruiting trail or on the court. Only a fool would say otherwise.

These wild goose chases with the hearsay on this board are comical about the staff is on this guy, or the staff has a plan but just can't say a name until we know more info. Give me a break. That's all bs and nothing more.

The reality of the situation is we probably won't get another immediate big before next season starts and there probably won't be any staff changes before next season starts. I'd rather deal in reality than pipe dream shit any day.

If this team doesn't win more games next season then this vicious cycle will continue and then it's really time to move on from this regime.

My understanding is this guy wasn’t that good before the injury. Is that correct? If so absolutely makes no sense to give him a scholarship after the injury. This latest fiasco is just another example of these novices not having any idea what they are doing. Same shit different day.
2 sit out transfers, 1 injured player, and Amar . That was last years game plan. Was dumb before the 1 recuit and pg quit. But trust the process!
Playing 4 men short- they then decide to banish yakwe. 5 men down was their plan.
Now the plan is to add a big man- who won’t be as good as yakwe.
