Athlon 2018-2019
« on: September 08, 2018, 11:45:03 AM »
Athlon is out

The good:
-Ponds 1st team AA
-Ponds BE POY
-Simon 3rd team All BE
-Dixon is a transfer to watch
-STJ 11 seed
-STJ one and done (yes, for us that’s good)

The bad:
Chris Mullin is on the hot seat.

They point out that he has a 38-60 overall record and 12-42 record in the BE. That is awful over a three year period. No way around it.

How is it bad he’s on the hot seat? It’s good to know there are expectations even for Mullin.

Well, if he's on the hot seat that means the team is doing poorly. I assume you would like the team to do well. So, if the team is not doing well, that would be bad.

These are Athlon’s expectations.
I agree with them.

These are not the University’s expectations as far as we know right now.

This is the same University that signed Norm Roberts to a multi year contract.

The team has been performing badly, which is bad, and why he should be on the hot seat, which is good. Hopefully the team meets expectations this coming season. I want Mullin to be successful, but if not the administration needs to be open to making a change.

I think this prediction is about right, barring key injuries.  The potential is there for top 20 if Herron is eligible and we win 10+ in the big east without any dreadful losses.  Keep your fingers crossed boys.

Where do they pick us to finish in the Big East?

Mullin will not be on the hot seat if they end up being an 11 seed and make the tournament.  I guess they're talking about right now because otherwise, that is incongruent.

Thanks for posting Poison.  Did they mention Heron at all in their season projections? I wonder if the 11 seed projection was based on having him or not having him.  Also, was the Mullin hot seat statement based on before or after the one and done 11 seed season?  It'd be interesting for two coaches in a row to be fired after tournament appearances.

Mullin will never be fired.

Athlon placed us 4th in the BE and it seems they are including Heron in this scenario. That seems fair.

The Hot Seat section is based on past performance, and at 12-42,
it’s hard to argue that Mullin doesn’t belong there.

Lavin isn’t a St.John’s legend. He was fired only because of that. Mullin hasn’t started off well as Lavin, but if there is any hope of seeing him turn this program into a contender we’ll see it this season.

I think having Herron is a strong positive but, if not, we are loaded at the position and his failing to qualify shouldn't have too negative an effect.  Dixon, Trimble and Williams should get the job done collectively and Simon can pitch in as well.  Looking forward to a strong year,

Stop it. Herron is a 5* recruit out of HS and was one of the better players on a NCAA tourney team which happen to play in the SEC. To suggest that Dixon, Trimble, and Williams would have a similar impact on the team is ludicrous. They should still compete for a tourney bid without him, but they are clearly better off with him by a large margin.

Another positive about Heron is his size. He is tall and strong for a guard a will also help w our rebounding, which we need. We also need him for appropriate depth.

Agree with SJUFAN here.  Assuming some of the unknown variables like Dixon, Figueroa and Keita pay off then I think an 11 seed is achievable without Heron.  I expect more then 1 and done if he's eligible.

Spot on. Heron would be the second best player on this roster and third would be very far off.

This team needs Heron's size and strength at the two to make it possible to play without a real big man.
