If there wasn't a dream team....

Who would you pick to go to Olympic games from the collegiate level?

Rules: Must not choose any 1 and done players. Must still be in college and must not be an incoming freshman.

Storming the Floor did this and this is what they came up with....

Lets hear your picks.....13 players. Name your starters, 6th man, and the rest of your bench.

extremely interesting topic.

my starting line up:

PG Darren Collison -- lockdown defender with a reliable jump shot.  can run an offense.
SG Stephen Curry -- great shooter, decent defender, can play off the ball.
SF Damion Jones -- very good shooter, decent defender, does not need to be main option
PF Tyler Hansbrough -- extremely tough, can hit outside and inside shot, decent defender
C Kyle Singler -- can hit the three point shot, very tough, good defense, decent rebounder.  perfect compliment to tyler.

6th man: James Harden -- can play the 2/3 and maybe the 1.  he can shoot the three, and can hit shots in bunches.

Rest of bench:
PG: Nick Calathes/Eric Devandorf  -- two very good shooters who can run an offense.
SG: James Harden/Wayne Ellington -- ellington is a great shooter, who knows how to play in big games/great teams
SF: Danny Green/Chase Budinger -- green is a glue guy every team needs.  he's in the tayshaun prince mold.
PF: Blake Griffin/Chase Budinger -- griffin is very tough, good rebounder, good defender.  budinger can play the 3-5 in a euro type format, and can shoot.  he'll be a poor man's carmelo in the olympics.
C: Tyler Smith/Blake Griffin -- smith can shoot the three and is a hustler.  he's got no glaring weakness.

Definitely left off a few names who I might consider to be starters. I especially don't like who you picked for your big men either. Kyle Singler is not holding it down at center he is soft.

I was looking for a guard with more size and more of a role player. Ruoff came to mind he always just gets it done and is a very unsung hero.

I'd replace Pargo with Tyrese Rice.  Other than that I did a 12 man roster on my own and came up with the EXACT same guys you did except Sam Young and JB.  Young might be a 13th man but much as I like him I'm not sure that Justin would be my 14th man.  That said there seem to be a lot of incoming frosh that would make the team based upon what's been written but since I've never seen any of them didn't include them.

Question for the old guys (am I on the wrong board for that).  In the old days did outgoing college players participate in the Olympics before signing their NBA contracts and going to camp?  Trying to remember but it's so long ago I can't. Obviously if they did the entire roster would be very different.

I'd work in Jarvis Varnado @ PF/ SF, before Justin, even if Varnado can't really make shots.  And I would probably start Griffin over Hansbrough - that guy gets the benefit of some American officiating.  He straight runs through people, too easy to have him pick up fast fouls.

DeJuan Blair and Dar Tucker get some love, maybe.  George Hill from IUPUI turned some heads at draft camp, he should get a look as well.  Maybe Michigan State's Goran Suton for height  if he is American?  I like Ruoff behind Curry and Harden; an American college all star team would have to play small.

Just show you how much the college game change.

Compare that team wit '84:
Mullin, Jordan, Ewing, Sam Perkins, Wayman Tisdale, Vern Fleming, Alvin Robertson, etc.

Talent aint nowhere where it use to be. Shame really.

I wouldn't say the talent isn't where it used to be. The talent isn't staying in college as long as it used to be and the international competition is much better than what it used to be. Put that '84 team against the international competition of today and I don't think they fare as well.

Rice is a good pick...I forgot about him.

I think graduating seniors/draftees could play and with a quick search players on the 1984 Olympics roster that were also drafted in 1984...Jordan, Perkins, Robertson

Well if they took drafted players and they all wanted to play the only guys I might still have on the roster would be Rice, Curry , Clark, Budinger and Griffin.  It might look something like this:

PG:  Rose, Augustin, Rice
SG: Mayo, Curry
SF:  Alexander, Clark, Budinger
PF:  Beasley, Love, Griffin
C:  R. Lopez, Speights, Hibbert

That looks a little more like an all star team.  Note that 4 of those guys are one and done.  Similar guys who might have been considered from this graduating class for my original roster would be Brandon Jennings, Samardo, BJ Mullin, Greg Monroe, DeRozan and a few others.

Anyone of these teams that we are creating would have gotten spanked by Spain. What a game that was last night, well I really should say this morning. Kept me up till 4:30am

That was a great game, with Kobe and Wade stepping up at the end.
Then, after it was over, the Chinese blasting "Born in the USA" as the players and coaches began to celebrate.
