Top 68 teams in the country.

Sju blurb..

"35. St. John’s

We find St. John’s in this weird space, where it should probably be higher when you consider All-American guard Shamorie Ponds and a newly eligible Mustapha Heron share the backcourt, but this is also perennially disappointing St. John’s and that creates skepticism. Would just making the NCAA Tournament be enough to keep Chris Mullin around?"

It not unreasonable to be skeptical simply because the program hasn’t produced a winning season since Lavin.

I know you're stupid, but did you notice that they ranked the team 35th in the country?

since Lavin.

You make it sound like it's like the last time Portugal won a war. Since Lavin is three years.

With this roster. 35 in the country sucks. 4th in the conference sucks.

I agree but I think there's just too many unknowns about the team for the national coverage to put them any higher then 35 preseason. LJ Figueroa, Keita, and Dixon all will be relied on heavily this year. We all hope they'll be strong contributors but the media isn't going to just count them in as automatic game changers before they've ever played a second wearing red and white. Couple that with the questions of whether or not Mullin is competent as a coach and I think 35 is about right preseason.

So if they're 35th in the country with Mullin, who stinks, you have to think that "with this roster" with someone who doesn't suck they'd be what. top ten? So really what you're saying is that Mullin's done a great job building a team from scratch in only three years and that he deserves kudos for his efforts.

Thanks for playing stupid.

The author writes that he thinks "sju should be higher" but the valid question marks are whats dragging them down.  I think with a proven coach this team would be around 22-28.

As far as Mullin doing a great job building such a great roster, I don't give credit for building a roster of transfers. You don't attain program stability by wasting scholarships on kids sitting out a year and then only having them play on your team for a year or two.  He gets major kudos for getting Ponds out of HS and developing him.  Outside of him, not one of our top 7 players will play 4 full years for St. John's.

That’s some of the dumbest thinking you can have. Having a 13th scholarship player never getting into a games is a wasted scholarship. Having the MAAC rookie of the year take your 13th scholarship and sit out a year is not wasting a scholarship. Having former top 100 players (Simon, Keita, Wright) sit out a year, work on their games and get accustomed to your team/style is not wasting a scholarship. Not a team in the country plays 13 guys.

However, there are a large amount that play ten in a game. Every single year we have 2-3 sit out transfers.  That means you're one injury away from a shorter then necessary bench.

Also, looking at this years roster there is absolutely no way Marcellus Earlington is the type of player who should be logging any minutes as a true freshman.  With proper scholarship distribution he would be an ideal candidate to redshirt. However because of only having 11 available scholarship players (4 big men) he'll be forced to log meaningful minutes at some point this year.

Coleslaw, so redshirting a freshmen is not a wasted scholarship whereas a transfer sitting out is a wasted scholarship?

Also, “large amount” is a stretch. Also, when have we had 3 sit out transfers?

Redshirting a kid who isn't good enough to play to allow him to develop and hopefully be ready the following year would be ok in my mind if you had enough players eligible to play and you could afford that luxury.  You can't afford that when you have two other guys already sitting out because of transferring.

Not sure on the 2-3 sit outs I thought we might have had a year of 3 but I could be wrong.

To compare apples to apples for my point is that I would much rather have this staff be better at recruiting HS players and be able to nab someone like Luther Muhammad, ranked number 79, and have him contribute for 4 straight seasons then land Eli Wright, ranked number 80 in 2015, and have him use 3 years of scholarship and only play 2.

I don't disagree, although I'd like to see an actual game before deciding how good they are or can be.

I don't care where the players come from. High school, JUCO, transfer. All I care is how they perform. Historically many of our best players on our best teams - Reggie Carter, Walter Berry, Hatten, Bootsy, Ron Rown, Hardy and Brownlee - were not HS recruits and only played a year or two. The fact is that unless you regularly get 4 and 5 star recruits - and we don't - most players only contribute a year or two anyway.

I’d like to be able to land HS recruits too. Just don’t think building via transfers is a bad thing or creates a lack of stability. In my opinion it actually gives stability. But we can disagree there. Last note, in this day an age I think getting 2-3 years out of a player, either HS or transfer, is about all you can ask for.
