Game 13: Seton Hall
« on: December 19, 2018, 10:06:05 PM »
We're ready. Who guards Powell?

Let's talk matchups, Hall strengths/weaknesses, lineups etc. Biggest game of the season thus far.

Should be a wild, packed house with everyone off for the holidays. Hope you have your tickets already.

It's going to be constant switching on Powell as they will screen for him all day. Just make him take contested shots and don't cheat off him.

Trimble is the best physical match for him, but he is savy enough to draw fouls on Trimble. Simon won't be able to stay in front of him consistently but would bother him with his long arms.

Heron could lock him up but will be needed elsewhere if Keita can't play 10-12 minutes.

Gotta hit the defensive and especially offensive glass and give a 35-40 minute max effort. That will determine this game.

I think we should start out with Justin hounding Powell, but we also need him and LJF on Nzei. I agree that switches are necessary to avoid foul trouble. Shamorie should stick McKnight the entire game. Marv/Sandro & Heron/Cale. Keita/Thompson should be a battle.

Some quick notes on Hall-

--Powell accounts for 32% of their team scoring. They're 201st in team scoring.

--291st in team rebounding.

--16th in turnovers, that'll change against us.

Need to keep up that solid team rebounding and keep Sandro off the boards.

Justin will almost certainly get the assignment to start but he hasn't kept anyone in front of him and it's not realistic for him to stay with a 6'1/6'2 combo.

It'd be nice to see Ponds actually pick up a key defensive assignment. There is no hiding in the NBA.

This thread and conversation should be tabled until 12/23.

Facing the ultimate trap game on Saturday. The media was already asking about the Hall in the press conference and now we're looking past Sacred Heart literally too?

A recipe for disaster.

Early season mission accomplished.  Have at it.  Let the hype begin.

Yeah boiii here we go!!!

The camera angle was weird but Sandro didn't look big at all. He moves well. Gill looked humongous but stiff as can be with bad hands.

Mullin said he will unveil new sets for conference play that he's been sitting on!

Should be an interesting turnover matchup.  Both teams very strong at protecting the ball, while also creating turnovers on the other end.  Hopefully our length will give Powell trouble, at least enough to slow him down a little.  I think we do, and pick up a win.

Considering this is only the first game of conference play, it's a big game in terms of legitimizing our record.  Already pumped.

I think they only sell the lower bowl, right?

Not the best outlook, 7'2 Romaro Gill is going to give us real problems off Hall's bench. Mamu, Nzei and Thompson now look that much more deep without Keita. Let's hope there is a sliver of hope that he plays Saturday, otherwise we're looking at a dicey foul trouble situation:

St. John's Sedee Keita (knee) is "progressing well in rehab", but still has no set timetable for return, per Chris Mullin. St. John's opens Big East play Saturday at Seton Hall. #SJUBB #shbb.

Sedee Keita didn’t practice fully with team yesterday. Still building up strength in knee. Not ruled out for Saturday yet #shbb

Ready to run through a brick wall after reading this thread:

I thought their takes on STJ were pretty fair, some guys came in and corrected the badmouthing.

Proud to see our own TonyD3 badmouthing our team on an opponents forum.

Surprised he didn't ask for best place to take a shit.
"Hi I am a ST John's fan but I hate the coach and team. I rally hope Seton Hall kills us because otherwise I will have nothing to post about on the ST John's forum. BTW I am really gassy from all the cheese I eat and was wondering if you guys know of a nice bathroom I could drop a deuce in after the game, thanks Tony D"

I think we’ve seen so far that opposing bigs aren’t much of a problem given the speed and spacing on offense. Haven’t played any top notch big men yet and of course would like keita back but I think playing the same way as the past 12 games should neutralize most centers.

They will have matchup problems with us.

Avoiding foul trouble is the key. If we do, we win.
