Game #16: @ NOVA
« on: January 05, 2019, 05:45:37 PM »
Source: Mike Stevens will be one of the officials for Tuesday night's game between St. John's and Villanova. Stevens was the one who made the controversial call last week when St. John's fell to Seton Hall. #SJUBB

Maybe we'll get several makeup calls?

No way.  The league wouldn't slap us in the face like that.

This game is found money.  2 and 2 is a great start considering it's 3 road games and one against the highest ranking BE team.  3 and 1 would be off the hook.

Mike Vaccaro has great article in Post today (maybe someone can link it).  Today the 36th anniversary of the day the Redmen finally "manned up" to Georgetown.  Us oldtimers will remember that day as the day Kevin Williams made the statement that we would not back down to them, as he wouldn't take anything from Ewing and swung back when Ewing took a swing at him.  We had sat through beatdowns in Chris' first year including being down 9-41 at the Garden.  Maybe tonight we will celebrate this great day in Redmen history with an upset of The Lox on their campus arena.  PS--Trimble is my Williams the way he fouls hard (not his offensive game but his defense).

That's not a winner's mindset. Step on their throats. No Spellman, DiVencenzo, Brunson, or Bridges. Painter transferred, JQ looks like a rare bust, they aren't deep, big, or experienced.

I agree in so far as the team should play free and easy. This is not a must win but doesn’t mean we shouldn’t win. Let’s show them who is boss this year.

Nova is well coached and playing on their home turf, but to your point, they have been inconsistent--probably owing to their inexperience.  But they have a lot of talented kids that can beat any team in the country on any given night, IMO.  A win tonight will be HUGE, but should not be expected.

51.4% of Nova’s FG attempts are 3s, 4th highest percentage in the country. That isn’t going to change tonight. That’s where the game is going to be won or lost. Need to close out hard

Not this team. Not this night.

Baldi will be clad in St. John's gear by week's end.

That’s crazy Carmine. Is it never our turn?

Nova is rebuilding, and we start five upperclassmen. We have to take it to them tonight.

I think the ref’s mistake against Seton Hall was enough to wake the sleeping giant. We could look back on it as the spark that we needed.

You can see the same thing in last year's 2 games where they took nearly 60% of the shots from 3.  We on the other hand, took 27 from 3 in the 2 games--combined or less than 25%.  This year we are taking 27 per game; we are a different team in approach.

We can never have a Nova road game without it reminding me of the now infamous Sly Fox road trip down to Philly at the start of the Hollywood era.

Got to sit next to and chat with our own Mjmaher the whole way down.  Good times!

Yes Michael, I'm sorry to disappoint you - but it is never our turn.

Yep. We shoot and make far more 3s this year than we did last year. But I think we have to beat good teams on the road with defense. Going to be very tough to win if we let Nova shoot 40% from 3 tonight

This same Nova team has already lost to Furman and to Michigan by 27 in this gym this year. Penn exposed them w backdoors all night in the Palestra in December. They sqeaked by a 3-10 LaSalle.

I'd give us the edge in almost every matchup tn. Do what we do and we come back up 95 2-0.

It's time to let VanillaNova Nation know that their reign is over.

Stay down on the ball fakes!
