Started the game out the same way they played against Depaul. No energy on defense, no one moving on offense and a lot of 1 on 1 play. Thankfully that all changed in the second half. Glad to see Heron have a great second half, definitely need him moving forward if we want to make some noise. Also did really well on the boards.....Marvin and LJ!

Half time adjustments, that's all Coach Mullins. He ate Doug McDermott's father's lunch.

Want to echo what some others have said, LJ is fun to watch. He effects the game in ways Ponds can’t due to his size. Sort of like a more skilled Sir Dom in that he will control all facets of the game in spurts. Excited for him and Ponds to continue to work off each other as the season progresses.

Reminds me of a more perimeter Moe Harkless
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

I was getting nervous when they spent the majority of the first half getting the same shots they were getting in the pre-game layup line. Then they had that rare 6 point play.

But we got down 9 and Walden took over. Hit a three - banked a three - made more plays and we were off.

Ponds goaded into tecs too easily.  You're the superstar - act like it. Opponents will use this as a tactic. We already know where Brooklyn at - just chill.

Gil Scotts second half slightly better than his first.

The concession lady gave me a free box of popcorn on the way out.  It was a good night.

Haha he did make some adjustments you are spot on. Utilizing Mustapha in the post against a smaller defender and a freshman in Zegarowski to get him going. Made some nice defensive adjustments as well.

Yes they are picking up on Ponds Brooklyn "tude". He's got to know this and ease up. A technical on him is a disaster .

Exactly why I said he has to slow his role

His role is fine. He might need to slow his roll though.

I agree. McDermott is the best in-game coach in the conference IMO too. This crop of kids seems to be rather clueless compared to his past teams.

I don't understand why Mintz is allowed to guard Ponds and Howard. They both killed him. Alexander is the clear option there regardless of how impressed he was with Mintz asking to be the defensive stopper.

perhaps their assistant who coaches their guards (Preston Murphy) isn't quite focused on his job as he used to be with the feds on his case.

I like his edge. That was probably the best thing about Lavins first team and it’s nice to have someone injecting it into this team. I think there is such thing as a good technical.

Sure there are good times but his timing has been poor so far.

I was half way kidding. When SJ blows a half time lead there's reams of posts about the other guy's HT adjustments and when SJ blows people out in the second half there's nary a mention, because it's all about the narrative.

I don't think Mullin close to a great in-game coach or maybe even a good one. But it doesn't matter, because in game coaching is wildly over rated. Most coaches are dumb as rocks. I agree that Doug McDermott's father is as good a coach as there is in the league and as good as he is he might be good for a couple of wins a season. (Viz., a couple of seasons ago he played a triangle and two versus Lavin and Lavin nearly had a nervous breakdown.) Which is not nothing, but it's not everything either. Great coaching in the main comprises imagining and implementing a winning system and recruiting quality players into it. Boeheim, Skrewshrenki, John Beilein, and going back John Wooden and Bobby Knight and even good old Lou C, none of them are or were not rocket scientists. Which good for them, it's not a job requirement. Because if it were they wouldn't have majored in gym.

Bye bye Preston - will fat boy McDermott catch any heat?

Creighton announces astt Preston Murphy has left his post “to pursue other opportunities in basketball.” Murphy was one of the assistant caught on FBI video in Vegas in 2017 accepting $ from undercover agents — but he was never charged with a crime. Was on leave since the summer.
