Game 22: @Duke 12P (ESPN, 570 AM)
« on: January 31, 2019, 12:53:17 PM »
Shamorie > Tre Jones
LJF > Cam Reddish
MH < RJ Barrett
Marv < Zion
Justin > Jack White

Duke is a terrible 3P% team (31%). Also noteworthy that they're FT% (67%). Like others have stated, play loose and free. Keep their star power as limited as possible. Obviously their crowd will be a factor.

I think a home/home sweep is attainable, they matchup well. The returnees have a mental edge. I expect Shamorie to have a Bootsyesque Durham performance. This is the opportunity of the season, steal a W and its nearly a smooth sail to Selection Sunday.

Did a great job last year of limiting their big men when our biggest man was Tariq. Hopefully the staff can figure it out this year as well, tho they should be able to defend us better this time around.

We are winning this game, I don't have a single doubt about that.

I see us up by 10-15 throughout the second half, and ending up winning by 6.

Tougher to nail down a large spread game like this but I'm gonna go with Duke -18. It will be in the range of a 1/16 or 2/15 NCAA Tournament game

LOL.  Your level of optimism is impressive.

I predict a Duke win by 10-15 - close-ish in first half but by 10 mins left Duke w comfortable lead.

Our history at Cameron Indoor from and after the game in February 2000:

2011-2012: 83-76.  #8 Duke.  Harkless gave us a shot with strong play in the second half but we fell short.

2009-2010: 80-71.  #6 Duke.  Norm's last season.  Kennedy and Sean Evans got us within 4 midway through the second half.

2007-2008: 86-56.  #5 Duke.  Kennedy/Boothe/Evans/Burrell freshman season.

2005-2006: 70-57.  #1 Duke.  Blew us away in the second half. Aaron Spears had 14 points.

2003-2004: 79-58.  #6 Duke.  ESPN headline is "6th ranked Duke added more misery to St. John's worst start in 81 seasons."

2001-2002: 97-55.  #3 Duke.  Worst loss in St John's history since 1922.

1999-2000: SJU wins 83-82.  #3 Duke.  Coach K quote "In a one-game situation, they are a really dangerous team.  They are old, well-coached and play with a lot of heart."

Do they still have the OOC home game win streak going since our last game there?

Unfortunately, I think most of our starting five are going to foul out of this game.

Yes.  They have won 150 games in a row since then.

SJ upsets ESPN's favorite team at Cameron in front of Jay Bilas Jay Williams and Duke Vitale? Odds slightly lower than Trump impregnating Nancy Pelosi.

All on offensive fouls and in the first seven minutes.

We lose 90-78. Start off strong, but as was discussed foul issues, no bigs depth and playing at Cameron against one of the nation's best is too much to overcome. Second half Duke pulls away.

They're also 13th in the country in 3pt % defense at 29.2%. Gonna be a long day at the office if they lock us down from deep.

On a side note: February 26, 2000. My wife goes into labor around noon-ish. Get to the hospital and I endure multiple sharp looks from the nursing staff as I watch the Duke/SJU game while absentmindedly attending to my wife (one might say practically ignoring) as she goes further into labor. Bootsy hits the game winner, I go crazy, and I think "my child (a son, as it turns out) is going to be born the day we beat Dook at Cameron. God loves me and wants me to be happy". Of course he winds up being born at 2am, so technically the next day. Close but no cigar.

F**k Duke. Lets Go Redmen.

I got a kid story too about that golden era beat Puke St. Johns team.

My daughter was 3 years old and way too into the Johnnies for a kid her age as I had been taking her to games since she was 5 months old when I would carry her into Alumni hall in the removable car seat and sit way up top where it was sort of quiet and we could have some room.

One day while still three she asked me "Dad, who's your favorite St. Johns player?"  I said "I like Bootsy."  She goes "Oh, I like Postell."  I'll never forget it.
