Indiana names McLeod assistant basketball coach

(AP)—Former NBA player Roshown McLeod has been hired as an assistant coach at Indiana.

New coach Tom Crean said Thursday that McLeod will work with the Hoosiers’ inside players. The 6-foot-8 McLeod played at St. John’s and Duke and was a first-round pick by Atlanta in the 1998 NBA draft.

He later played for Philadelphia and Boston and averaged 7.2 points and 2.7 rebounds in 113 career games. He later was an assistant at Fairfield and coach and director of basketball operations at Woodward Academy in Atlanta.

KOB..    no disrepect intended. . but this right here is a perfect example of how some of the younger people that are fans of the program and around the program don't understand or reallt get the frsutration of the older fan base...

McLeod was a huge recruit to SJU at time he came. . coming from St. Anthony...  he left after his Freshman year because he was not happy with minutes and his place in the offesne...    at the time of his trasnfer he became eithr the only or one of the very few transfers Coach K had ever accepted..

He actually played two years here.
During the year he head to sit out, I spoke with Coach Hurley about it. He basically felt Mahoney was squandering McLeod's potential. He mentioned the tremendous difference in facilities, which had already vastly improved McLeod's body. With two good years down there, he felt Coach K could make him into an NBA player. Despite being a sixth/seventh man for Mahoney's NIT, McLeod went on to be first-team all-ACC and their team captain before getting drafted by the Hawks. He was a finalist for one of their openings this summer.

its funny to look at that list...

People rip Coach Mahoney all the time (maybe not on here as much) but in the class he locked down the #2 ranked local player...   the same guy that got Felipe & Zendon...

The point being..  even the guy  that is considered a "bad caoch" at St. John's was able to land local talent....  how come our current staff has been unable to..?

Whats worse a guy who cant get the players or a guy who gets the players and we still suck?

Solid point, PMG911
The standards have dropped- a lot.

People talk about getting big classes, but it is almost unthinkable that Mahoney got a two of the top five players and another top 75 player (Turner).

Two years later, STJ signed a top 25 Postell and Collin Charles

C'mon yo.
You gonna take a list seriously that got Ray Allen on the 8th team and Marcus Camby on the 10th?

Jalil wuz the man on that St. Anthony team. He took over where Rodrick Rhodes left off.

Roshown wuz mad talented but he wuz a lil passive. Maybe that what happen at St. John when you got a mad, crazy, aggressive baller like Charles Minlend playin ova the mo passive Roshown. No disrespct. Just my analysis of 15-year-old ball. Nuthin else.

No offense, but it would be highly unusual for a player that wuz not the star (McLeod) on such a high profile program like St. Anthony's to be ranked significantly higher by a professional recruiting analyst at that time over the star of St. Anthony's (Roberts, who amounted to nothing but little production and trouble at Wisconsin and SH). This wasn't a shooting guard from SC (Allen) or a pf from Hartford (Camby).

Maybe what happened at St. John's was an inept head coach with a charming personality was able to recruit talented players, but, in the instance of McLeod versus Minlend, misallocated the minutes through a misevaluation of talent.

I hear what you sayin. Roshown had a betta career. Aint no doubt. But that senior season when they won the states.... that team was Jalil's team.

Roshown wuz mo talented than Charles Minlend. But I gots to say. I love me some Charles Minlend. That brother was an animal on the court in the best of senses.
