Justin Simon Earns BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Honor

150 players in the league and only one can be the best! He took and still takes a lot of heat on the board, even from our best posters.

We now have certifiable proof positive of his value.

Proof that there is talent on the team, further proof of what a terrible job the staff has done coaching it.

I’m not going to stick my head in the sand while the program I rout for is run into the ground regardless of who is at the helm. How much evidence do the apologist need to see to realize the experiment isn’t working. If Mullin replaces his staff I’ll rout for him. If he will not then he needs to go.

You can criticize. You don’t need to turn every thread into an opportunity to criticize. Simon is a great defensive player. We are lucky to have him.

Well deserved to one of the best kids ever in a SJU uniform.

Need Simon to lock in every night if we're gonna make a BE tourney run.

What a great freaking game by Simon tonight, including his defense on Strus. Absolutely shut down the hottest player in the league.

I go back 7 decades and can say that Simon played the best defense of any SJU player since a guy  named Keilty in the 70's. But even Keilty never a had a defensive game as good as Simon had against Struz.

Other than Simon we don’t have a great individual defender yet we have the best on-ball defense and help defense we’ve had since Jarvis (not including the Dunlap zone) by a  f*cking mile.

Some of these handoffs are just ridiculous. The attention to detail is very impressive. There was a switch back tonight from Figueroa and Keita that was so seamless it was crazy.

You owe him an apology.  Biggest game of the year for all the marbles and he came up huge.

Probably that newbie that says he's not a D1 player does too.

I’m the last person that owes him an apology. I’ve been calling for him to play the way he did last night for two years. He can’t dribble and he can’t shoot. Let him post all game. Let him drive on one or no dribbles all game.

Before you had the ugly breakup with Ponds and he gave you back the ring, you had a whole slander campaign going against him in an odd attempt to make your boy (he didn't need it) look better.

Recently I recall some quote from you where you said 'It's hard to win with two players like Clarke and Simon' or something to that effect, right?

How quickly they forget.

Simon is an AWFUL guard. The single biggest weakness of this team is a lack of a competent second ball-handler. I’ve been ridiculed for saying that I think Simon has NBA potential as a 4/3.

It is very difficult to win when you have two guys like Simon and Clark playing unintelligently. Last night both guys played their positions. Clark played almost possessed and bodied up and defended. Simon ran the baseline, cut, and posted up. His drives were 0 or 1 dribble and all legs. He took two bad shots—one from three and that one he got wedged between the rim and backboard. That is playing within his abilities.

I’m not sure how much more clear I can be on this? Post up Simon all night. Get him off the perimeter. Look at how Gage killed DePaul. I’d happily led that kid go for 35. That’s what good coaches do to us with Simon. We beat that by posting him.

I think your viewpoint is relatively nuanced. For the most part I agree, but will say that he gets away with below average handles because he plays so fast and big.

Also, I reject the idea that a guard HAS to be a perimeter threat. Tony Allen for example was mostly a 2 as is Andre Roberson, tho I guess he played more forward in college.

Still think Simon has a shot at the NBA as a 2/3 if he can refine his offensive game away from the basket but inside the line.

As you should be. How many 4/3s in the NBA are 6'5 and can't shoot? What could Simon do better at those positions than Dom Pointer who never got a shot in the NBA?
