“On April 22, 2010, the NCAA announced that the tournament would expand to 68 teams, with four "Play-In Games" beginning with the 2011 tournament.”

So I’m an idiot for referring to the term the NCAA themselves used to describe the games in THEIR tournament. So either they too are idiots or your a fool for making up your own meaning for someone else’s product.

I apologize.  You're not an idiot. I've been trying to have more of an acid fingers approach to pick up the void created by Doc's departure.

I'm not very good it.

I will say this about it.  The main difference and reason they've gone to this playin format and didn't in the majority of other field expansions is the unforeseen, relatively recent and massive explosion in popularity of the Ncaa tournament bracket gambling. It's the greatest free sports marketing tool ever devised. Surpassing the other family favorite, super bowl boxes. They wanted expansion but didn't want to screw up the beloved bracket format.

But rest assured, win or lose we are very much already in the Ncaa tournament.  What would you label our Wednesday game? Nit? BE tournament? Conference game? Out of conference? Scrimmage?  The easy clear answer is its an Ncaa tournament game between two teams that qualified for the Ncaa tournament. Same as the 17th team, 33rd team, 54th team, etc. that reaped the benefit of expansion in years past.

Are you referring to Doc Butler ?  Is he officially gone from the site ( RM.Com) or just choosing not to post

Not sure if this has been posted yet...regardless of the overall timbre of the article, the metrics against us were pretty unfavorable. I almost have to think the committee looked at what the NET etc would have been if the Clockgate result would have flipped. Would have been two sweeps of tourney teams and a near sweep of the other.

I apologize.

No problem. I’ve been called worse.

The first playin game was created after the Mountain West Conference was formed in 1999 and was given an automatic bid for its conference champion, which made it the 31st conference to receive an automatic berth into the men's tournament. The tourney organizers wanted to keep their at-large entries at 34. In order to eliminate one of the teams to have a 64-team bracket, it became necessary for another game to be played between the two lowest-ranked teams among the automatic bid leagues.

But rest assured, win or lose we are very much already in the Ncaa tournament.  What would you label our Wednesday game?

It’s not what I would call it, it is what the tournament organizers call it, and that is the first four in. It’s not the first eight in. So to me that means you need to win to get into the tournament and be the “first four in”. Also consider the first round officially begins on Thursday, not Tuesday or Wednesday, Thursday. If you go onto the ESPN tournament challenge site right now it says “Tournament begins in 3 days”. You also do not have an option of selecting any of the “first four in” games as part of the tournament challenge.

We have a chance to be in the tournament, I’m excited about that. But based on the language, if we don’t beat ASU, we were never in the tournament. We was given an opportunity to “play to get in” the tournament. I would be curious to see how it would be recorded officially, but either way, personally I wouldn’t feel like we made it if we lost to ASU.

What’s wrong with you! We’re in. It’s called the field of 68.

Stop playing with words to support your negative stance. Why does ESPN’s tournament challenge control?

From your source ESPN:

“With Villanova, Marquette, Seton Hall and St. John's all making the NCAA tournament and DePaul playing in the College Basketball Invitational, all 10 Big East teams will be involved in postseason play.”

We had 5 Quad 1 wins. The bubble was very soft, who should have got in over us? We deserve the spot.

How is it negative? Im happy for the opportunity. I’m just saying what it is. Who calls it the field of 68? The tournament organizers calls it the first four in, not the field of 68 to my knowledge.

Nope. But apparently facts isn’t welcomed here.

To be fair that language was used before however officially, the first round is the first games played by the final 64 teams, and began officially using "First Four" to refer to the Tuesday and Wednesday games.

I’m just wondering what the decision was actually based on.

I believe it was the number of Quad 1 wins we had compared to a school like NC state. We were 5-7 and they were 0-9 or 1-9, something like that.

It is post season play. It’s an official game. A game which decides who will be one of the first four into the tournament.

I think part of it was what someone mentioned before ponds and Herons injuries for 4 games we lost...they gave duke the #1 overall seed factoring Zions absence in dukes 2 losses vs NC...
Honestly, there were 4 other teams that could have easily gotten that last spot. The basketball gods were on our side

It's called the First Four because its the first four games.....get this...OF THE TOURNAMENT.

It has nothing to do with winning and being "the first four in" because that doesn't even make sense how are they the first in wouldn't they be the last in.

Stop.

I watched the Ncaa tournament selection show with my own eyes and saw St. John's selected as a participant in the 2019 Ncaa tournament. Your negative nonsensical talk will not diminish my enjoyment of this marvelous accomplishment in the least.

The phrase is actually “First for in” not “First four”. What you said would make sense if 1. it was called First Four, and 2. The official 1st round doesn’t start until Thursday, if it was a he official start to the tournament, it would be the 1st round. The tournament officials doesn’t appear to recognize these 4 games as the start of the tournament, that’s because they are playin games.
