Lindy’s and Athlon
« on: September 11, 2019, 03:31:50 AM »
Lindy’s has us 9th. Athlon has us 10th. Neither think much of LJ.
Lindy’s didn’t rank him in their top 150 college basketball players.

Hope that motivates him.

National media doesn’t know how bad Mullins and staff really was. The incredible improvement in coaching will surprise some people.

Totally agree, we might see addition by subtraction here. Professional college coaches who work and coach, what a concept.

Don't agree with this. Staff had their shortcomings and I think preparation could have been better but I don't think you'll see remarkable difference better/worse this year with talent on the team.

We lose the pre-season BE player of the year candidate, the BE defensive player of the year, starting center, back up center, and sixth man. We replaced those bodies with, as you say, mid major talent. Yet you don’t believe we’ll see remarkable difference? Sounds like you do agree the coaching has improved.

What I'm saying is I don't expect anyone on the roster to make unbelievable strides. I think there will be natural maturation but there isn't going to be something miraculous due to coaching change.

I think the Big East is fairly open and parity exists but I think these predictions are fair. We might be better than DePaul and that's about it.

Last year we found out what would have happened if we let norm coach his seniors. We had so much talent and achieved so little.
If mullin came back, forget 9th we would be back in last place. This year with Anderson we have a chance at a fun season. Finishing .500 in the big east with this group is possible and would be feel much better then last year with all the talent that we had that was wasted.
This is finally year 1 in a complete rebuild.

So we would have made the tournament and lost in the first round. Good one slingblade.

Those in the "know" are predicting yet another year of mediocrity.  At least our ticket prices are high major.

LJ did some of everything. Off first season should improve if he gets help.

It really felt like Mullin and his staff had no answer for almost a month. A coach has to provide that leadership so that by the end of the season, the team comes together.

We simply haven’t seen it in ages.
Last season was frustrating. We were so talented, but as a whole, we didn’t get after it. Opponents always had easy baskets from all over. It’s my pie in the sky dream that Mike Anderson builds a defensive powerhouse here and a name for himself in the city that didn’t even know who he was, with the players that no one wanted.

Likely, not this year, but stranger things have happened just about every season in college basketball.

I know I'll have fun at the games. Doubt that's solely because of the Razorback. Mullin missed .500 by 1 (shotclockgate) game. Would be keen if Anderson does as well.

A team with Lj and Heron is not a complete rebuild.  If you need a reference to teach you what a rebuild is - Just look at Mullins first season.

Sounds like you agree it hasn't as you make players recruited by the prior staff sound awesome.

It's easy to make wild claims that never can be proven true or false.

10th, 8th, 9th and 7th were where Mullin's team finished in the BE in his 4 year tenure. That averages out to almost 9th place over those 4 seasons. Based on his track record, a prediction of him finishing 9th this coming season sounds pretty reasoned and based on historical data. Sounds like someone else is the one making wild, less than reasoned claims.

If LJ is not in top 150, that guy needs to find another job and this seriously hurts his credibility with anything basketball. What a disgrace. TBH at some points last year, I preferred LJ to Ponds in big moments.

I was originally responding to Dave when he said the last staff had shortcomings. Choosing unproven St. Jean to coach the team was just stupid. Not a shortcoming.
Allowing him and only him to continue to coach the team was embarrassing and disgraceful. The head coach not coaching or working hard is not a shortcoming. The head coach hiring a terrible staff is not a shortcoming. The team not being prepared and going through the motions is not a shortcoming.

Carmine- even though you continue to stick up for coach lazy ass. I still can’t believe you are serious. He wasn’t just a bad coach. Besides “fxck you” what did he do? The fact that you mentioning that last years team had no depth or size as a positive is mind boggling. But you don’t have much to argue. (Yakwe and Owens)
Chris mullin - no job
Part time Mitch- no job
St. Jean- is a coach- But so far down on the totem pole, he can’t even sit on the bench.
I have no agenda. Coach Mullins is gone. But not forgotten.

I think we finish in 6th place this year. I don’t think anyone quits the team mid season. I don’t think any player transfers mid season. I think almost all the players on the current roster graduate with a degree from St. John’s. After next year I think we never play another game on Wednesday night of the big east. (I think their is a good chance we don’t play that night this year or next.)

Year 1 culture and defense. We are going to have a team that we can be proud of.

Look what happened to the islanders when they made a change. Look at north carlolina football. 2-0 under Mack brown. He is a figure head. I would bet my life his coordinators aren’t 23 years old. We are about to see a dramatic change to our team. I wish it happened a year earlier when we had more talent. Last year could have been a magical season. 7th place with the top talent in have big east sucks. 7th place with this year’s team working hard is a good start.

Fair enough.  I'll retract the "wild" but the "never can be proven" still rings true. Yet let's not ignore direction and momentum. 10th was the 1st season in which John Wooden would have finished 10th and 7th was the most recent very successful Ncaa tournament bid season in which we missed 3rd place by 1 (shotclockgate) game.
