HOME INVASION
« on: September 04, 2008, 11:12:40 PM »
Just got my home invaded 2 days ago. All of our (me, my wife and my 13 month old son's) personal info was compromised such as Social Security cards, Birth Certificates, Passports, etc.

My wife and I feel very violated. It's a feeling I wouldn't wish upon anyone!!!

To all of you, learn from my mistake and please make sure you have renters and/or homeowners insurance as well as a safe that is bolted to the floor which will store all of your documents.

Sorry to hear this.....I was just a victim of identity theft....had to get rid of my credit cards, change my checking and saving accounts. What a nightmare. Thank God you and your family were not home!

I am very thankful they weren't home. However, the vengence side of me wishes I was! All of the material things can be replaced. But all of our identities are compromised. I had to call up all my credit card companies and banks stating that they need to change all of the typical security questions they ask over the phone (mother's maiden name, last 4 digits of your social, etc.) so they can't pose as any of us since they have all of that info.

Additionally, when I went to put a fraud alert on my son's social security number, they told me I couldn't because he is a minor! Sounds like a bunch of BS to me!

Thank everyone for all of their kind words so far.

Sucks, friggin animals! A couple of houses(including a friends) in my neighborhood were robbed recently. Just a thought, it might be someone you know as this was the case in Rockaway

LOL I was going to ask this too but then I thought to myself all his personal information was stolen and now I'm going to ask for his personal information!?!?

Either way sorry to hear about this terrible situation for you. Anything we can do to help you out in this matter please don't hesitate to ask. I don't think we can do too much but if we can we will. Also look at the bright side you weren't home and if you were things could have been worse.

It's OK. It's not like the people who did this don't know.

I live in Queens (Howard Beach).

Glad you are ok.

When I was a kid, our house was robbed (in queens as well) and we walked into the robbery in action and it caused me a lot of nightmares for years as a young kid.

Better not to be home when it happens.

Hope all works out.

Just found out that these low lifes tried to take out a mortgage in my wifes name (after I put the fraud alert on all our Social Security Numbers). Boy I am pissed!!

For everyones info... if this ever happens to you... make sure you also put a security freeze as well through all 3 credit agencies!

No... Life Lock only puts a "fraud alert" on your SSN every 90 days. However, putting a fraud alert does not keep anyone from taking out credit in your name. It only makes it a bit harder for them (if the person running the credit check does their job!). What I mean is that if someone tries to take out credit in your name and you have a fraud alert on your SSN... they are "SUPPOSED TO" ask for additional info to make sure that you are who you say you are!

TO TRULY SECURE YOURSELF:

You have to do is (1) file a police report obviously (2) then call up all 3 credit agencies individually(experian, equifax and transunion) and let them know that you have been a victim of fraud/identity theft and you would like to put a "credit freeze" on your SSN. (3) once they put a "credit freeze" on your SSN... nobody can access your credit unless they have the PIN number which is created for you once you call to put the freeze on!

Choz... sorry for not responding earlier. I think you can tell from the rest of the conversation that... YES... someone broke into my home (during the day) when nobody was home and they stole me and my families things including our personal information.

Messed up yo.

Thing is why would they try and get a mortgage? Dont that leave a paper trail and they can be caught?

I don't know. You would figure that. The only thing is that they would probably try and take out an extra amount in cash. For instance, if I qualified for a mortgage of 400k... they would apply for a home of 300k and work with a mortgage broker who "pad's" the rest (100K) in cash to them.

Then they would never pay off the mortgage... and walk away with 100k in their pocket.

Thanks for the info...I thought Lifelock put a freeze on opening new accounts.  I didn't realize they just alerted you.
