Got Stats?
« on: November 10, 2008, 10:28:27 PM »
Hey everyone, as we all know Friday is the day we have been waiting for. Game #1, so i was thinking what are some interesting tid bits and stats from last year. Interesting things i could use for the radio. I figure you guys are rooted deep with the johnnies so lets see what remarkable info you guys can come up with. This will also help me for the broadcast on Friday.

P1nstr1pez i was wondering if you guys had a link online for the radio broadcast of all your games this season.  I have Full Court but the non-conference games besides LIU are not on Full Court and would be interested in checking you guys out if there is a link online for that.

Now who can provide some awesome info?

I think the most telling stats are the 3 pt %'s.  Malik averaged in the teens last year--lowest in the conference for a guard--and HAS to improve on that.  DJ and Paris were both over 30%, but they only took uncontested shots with their feet set.  That will change.  Also, the line has been moved back.

Who will step up alongside Mase as a shooter?

A stat to keep in mind as the season goes on is how poor we play with Malik out of the game.  I'm expecting a huge disparity there.

Another stat will be points per game. With Geno, we really didn't run a lot.  This year we will really be forced to.  Dj, Mase, and especially Paris get into the passing lanes and we will have a smallish, athletic froncourt that can run with anyone.  For us to be successful, we will probably have to be moving, pressing, and scoring about 10-15 more PPG.

-Norm Roberts would have to go on a 19 game winning streak to be a .500 coach at St. John’s.

-St. John’s has won one NCAA Tournament game this century.

-At a listed 5’9,” Malik Boothe is the shortest starting point guard in the Big East. He missed 85.9% of his three point attempts and 69.7% of all his field goal attempts.

-915 days have passed since the NCAA agreed to St. John’s self-imposed punishment.

-According to the trustworthy tangerine Athletic Director, the men's basketball squad posted its highest team GPA in more than a decade.

-St. John’s had two players that started last year, Larry Wright and Mike Cavataio, transfer elsewhere.

-Since January 1, 2000, according to the NCAA, St. John’s has won 80 games.

-Quincy Roberts was in third grade the last time St. John’s made a Sweet 16.

-St. John’s had a  0.76 Assists to Turnover ratio last season.

-With a metropolitan area population of 19,750,000, including over 140,000 living alumni, St. John’s average home attendance was 5,886 last season.

-During the Norm Roberts era, St. John’s has registered 26 double-digit wins and 36 double-digit losses, including 12 20+  point losses and 3 30+ point losses.

-St. John’s has a 12-28 (30%) record in February and March under head coach Norm Roberts.

-Anthony Mason needs 121 points  to become the forty-fourth STJ player to reach the 1000 point milestone.

-27.8% of last season’s production has graduated or transferred.

-For the first time since the eventful 2003-2004 season, St. John’s features at least three players listed at 6’10” or taller.

-Norm Roberts has a 20-46 record in the Big East.

Hey sleeveless- we're trying to promote excitement for the
 team & upcoming season. I guess you're not a fan ?

We know the problems we've been through.

"St. John’s had two players that started last year, Larry Wright and Mike Cavataio, transfer elsewhere."
Huh ?

-27.8% of last season’s production has graduated or transferred
I'd bet that is near or below average ?

Rather than Booth's shooting troubles, why not point out that as a Freshman during the BE schedule,
he had a better Asst/TO ratio 54/34 than the senior starting PG 57/42 ?

I'll let someone else compile the stats, but I'd bet that STJ frosh compiled more total and
average minutes than any other BE team- better experience than other current sophs.

How about pointing out that Mason 41% & Horne 45% had a  substantially better
3 pt %  during BE play than league average.

How about DJ Kennedy lead the team in offensive rebounding last year playing primarily the 2,
& probably right up there in the BE for all 2 guards ?

How about although playing mostly freshman at the 2, 4, and 5,
STJ out rebounded its opponents in the BE regular season

You guys are too much. Sleeveless I don't think SJU's radio station would use too much of those stats, some sad but true but I don't think they are what he was looking for. Also how much time did you spend looking that stuff up? Yikes.

Let's not match wits.
I would never "make up #'s."

Nice and slow for you
In the 2000 portion of the 1999-2000 season, St. John's won 17 games. [end of Barkley]
In 2000-01, the NCAA only recognizes 5 of the 14 wins. [Omar Cook's year]
In 2001-02, the NCAA only recognizes 7 of the 20 wins. [last NCAA appearance]
In 2002-03, the NCAA only recognizes 1 of the 21 wins [NIT champions]
In 2003-04, the NCAA only recognizes 2 of the 6 wins. [Pittsburgh]
From 2004-present, Norm Roberts has accumulated 48 victories.
This is how one arrives at 80 NCAA victories since January 1, 2000.
By contrast, Syracuse and UConn are the two winningest BE programs this decade at 222. Pitt is the only BE program even remotely close at 221. Fellow Catholic universities Gonzaga and Xavier have racked up 236 and 213 victories, respectively, this decade.
