I can see that in the case of Georgia Tech and Rutgers, where there is some weak justification for keeping a person in the job... but St. John's and Oregon? We will see.
And really, the other part of the down economy and coaching - and I am assuming that booster money is going to be weak (see T Boone Pickens' having to rescind some of the money he was giving to Ok State), and that schools' endowments are going to be low - is that some schools who would be more aggressive will keep their coach another year, and there will be a little less competition for college ball jobs. And smaller schools won't have the money to pony up to give their coach a raise/ give them a new contract to keep them in the fold....
So better coaches will be available, and their price won't be driven upwards by state school booster money.
I don't know how many cats are really in trouble this year, anyway.
