Choz has it right: job security.  He's got two young boys and he wants to stay in the area.  His stock is high enough where he's going to get to call his shots job-wise and he is really not far off from a head coaching job on the D1 level. 

I don't know how being an assistant coach under Norm Roberts would improve his resume.

Ast Coach at St. John's University a Big East Conference School

Head Coach at D2 CW Post a school outside of long island/ny no one knows about.


The coaching fraternity is a small circle, and by now people most definitely know who Tim Cluess is and what he can do and has done.  Yes, becoming an assistant coach at a high-major school would help to sculpt him and give him a bit more credibility, the fact is that an assistant coaching position at St. John's isn't exactly a secure job at the moment.

I don't think it would be a bad move for anyone.

If you a young coach, yeah its a good move.

But if you got a fams and evrybody depend on you and you got a secure job, why would y'all go to a place where the coach is on the hot seat?
