With the game well in hand Lance Stephenson jogged over to the motionless ball, listened to the large Carnesecca Arena crowd egging him on and took off.

His tongue wagging, he leapt high in the air, brought the ball down to his stomach before raising it above the cylinder and emphatically throwing down the windmill dunk.

Stephenson said he wanted that final two to show St. John’s coach Norm Roberts and Kansas assistant Danny Manning, both in attendance, what he was capable of. Devante Cutler, the Boys & Girls point guard who has faced Stephenson eight other times, thought differently.

“He let us know he owns us,” Cutler said.

NEWSMAN...the ban was self imposed but if we didnt self impose the ban, the NCAA would have banned us anyways, so that was a dumb point

as for available coaches...go to hoopscoop.com and you can see available coaches...Norm is a good coach...a good coach will be able to to coach his team, but when his job is in question (like Norm's, because of so many angry "fans") it makes his job of recruiting players 10 times as hard.

ATTENTION TO EVERYONE CALLING FOR NORMS HEAD!!! WHO IS OUT THERE TO REPLACE HIM? WHICH COACH IN AMERICA (OR THE WORLD FOR THAT MATTER) CAN MEET THESE REQUIRMENTS:
1. THEY ARE UNEMPLOYED RIGHT NOW
2. THEY WILL ACCEPT THE SALARY ST JOHNS PAYS
3. HAS TIES TO NYC BASKETBALL AND CAN GET RECRUITS THE WAY NORM AND COACH Q CAN
4. HAS TIES TO AAU AND PREP SCHOOL COACHES
5. CAN KEEP A PROGRAM CLEAN THE WAY NORM DOES (NORM REALLY DOES HAVE A THING FOR ATTRACTING "GOOD" KIDS, MANY COACHES WISH THEIR PLAYERS COULD STAY AS CLEAN AS ST JOHNS PLAYERS HAVE IN RECENT YEARS)

FACTOR IN ALL THESE THINGS. A COACHING CHANGE RIGHT NOW WOULD HURT THE PROGRAM MUCH MORE THEN HELP IT. SO MANY PEOPLE ON MESSAGE BOARDS LIKE THIS SEEM TO HAVE ALMOST A PERSONAL HATRED OF NORM (NO IDEA WHERE THAT COMES FROM?). PEOPLE MAKE IT SEEM SO EASY, "FIRE NORM AND GO TO THE TOURNAMENT." ITS NOT THAT SIMPLE AT ALL. AND ESPECIALLY FACTOR IN NORMS REPLACEMENT. WHO IS THAT GONNA BE? CALIPARI AND PITNO ARE NOT REALISTIC AT ALL AND IF YOU THINK ST JOHNS CAN PULL A COACH LIKE THAT YOU ARE LIVING IN A DREAM WORLD. IM JUST WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SUGGEST HIRING PHIL JACKSON. NORM IS NOT THE PERFECT COACH. ASK COLLEGE COACHES ACROSS AMERICA AND THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT THIS MAN IS A GOOD COACH (IVE HEARD THIS FIRST HAND FROM NUMEROUS D1 COACHES). I FEEL LIKE THE REASON PEOPLE HAVE SUCH A STRONG HATRED FOR NORM IS BECAUSE THEY NEED A SCAPE GOAT FOR ALL THE LOSSES. ALTHOUGH NORM PLAYS A PART OF IT, HE IS NOT THE SOLE REASON FOR OUR POOR RECORD. THERE ARE SO MANY VARIABLES TO FACTOR IN. DONT USE NORM AS A SCAPEGOAT BECAUSE THAT DOESNT HELP ANYONE AT ALL. IT IS HURTING OUR PROGRAM GREATLY.

Your first point shows exactly how out of touch you actually are or how naive you really are..

Since when does one coach being employed prevent him from being a candidate for another opening.

It's evident that bball_fan is either a relative or close friend of Roberts or a troll.

It's obvious clear (that he's one of the above-mentioned) by his 'out-of-touch' postings.

What big time coach at a big program would leave their current job to coach at St. Johns? Pitino,Calipari? No and no. Whose left on the scrap heap, Paul Hewitt-Georgia Tech wont buy him out. Anthony Grant-hes going big time. St Johns isnt bigtime. Tom Pecora-thats a step sideways. So who ?

I'd take Mark Jackson with some experienced assistants.  I'd take Pecora over Norm - no joke.  I'd take McCaffrey, Gregory --- see how their teams have done.  You don't think either of those guys comes to St. John's in a heartbeat?

These are coaches of teams who have MADE the NCAA tourney and woN! more than Norm could EVER say.

There are a plethora of coaches out there we could have, and not that expensively, who are WAY better than Norm.

McCaffrey could have his pick of jobs right now. Hes making 600+ at Siena, why would he come here if he could go to Arizona,Virginia or Notre Dame when Brey leaves or gets axed.Im not sold on Pecora, hes no Jay Wright. Mark Jacksons never coached a game on any level and you want him to lead this school to the promised land against the likes of Boeheim,Pitino,Calhoun,Huggins and Wright?

You will not know who is interested or not interested until you ask...

No one on this site truly knows who might be interested in the St. John's job...

A coach being employed isn't a factor most of the time unless the coach has a monster buyout that he or the interested school is not willing to pay.

Baldi - when the alternative is Norm Roberts, I would sign Mark Jackson to a TEN year deal in a heartbeat.  Norm is a proven LOSER.  He will never win.  I hope he gets a chance at a low-major school after ours, but after his performance with us, I doubt it.  He is a career assistant based on skill.  You apologize for him non-stop because he does it "clean" but after seeing guys like Gregory and McCaffrey, do you really think they wouldn't be better, even doing it "clean?"

And what happens in a few years when Jackson cant bring in recruits because St Johns cant offer kids what other schools are? Do we start blasting Mark Jackson, a school legend? Like I said, McCaffrey has a top 25 team returning next year, hes not leaving to come to Queens-especially when he could leave for Notre Dame or Arizona. All the guys youve mentioned arent coming cheap.

Mark can't do worse than Norm.

Fran would leave to come here.  ND job isn't even open.  You have NO idea who Arizona wants.  I think it's more likely AZ goes after Calipari or Dixon than McCaffrey - and theyll pay.  What abotu Gregory?  You really think he wouldn't be better than Norm?

I dont know much about Gregory, and the same could probably be said about local recruits. I wonder if some of these kids even know who Mark jackson is, other than being an announcer.

First, I don't think b_ball fan is a troll.  There are different ways of looking at St. John's problem, and he's looking at it a different way, even if most of the posters here don't agree.

Personally, I don't know that running a clean program and, like Norm, working for years to make those AAU connects has to be divested from a game coach and player developer.  He's done a job of improving the St. John's name, but it took years and new hires of Oz and Kimani.  I think someone else can take the same number of years to hit the NY pipeline and be a better game coach.  I don't think Norm is such a closer that another person with some connections to high school/ AAU ball can't do what he's done, while doubling as someone who can actually win games and coach the team up.

I also don't think that Pecora is a step sideways.  Or even an "available" coach like Tim Welsh (that right there is probably hyperbole, I admit, but I don't think Welsh is that bad, just a horrendous recruiter of top talent).  McCaffery might be a good choice, but we know the administration wants a guy to see this as a destination job.  He's in his 50s... maybe it would be a destination job for him.

The current problem with Norm isn't that he's not working hard, or that he's not getting in the door with the right people, it's that he's been losing games for so long it continues to be hard for players to consider the school.  Therefore, if you build on some of Norm's work and goodwill, and couple that with a new start, a "it's a new day" kind of coaching staff, why can't St. John's win?

Norm is not a scapegoat for the losses; he's a major part of them.  We watch a team that is fundamentally questionable, has turned the ball over A LOT every single year he's been at the helm, can never score, routinely gets blown out, and has one point guard whose performance this year really did not inspire any confidence.

To sum: the things Norm has done well are generally replaceable.  And given a mandate, I think another coach can find guys who don't get into trouble, attend class occasionally, and play hard.  The one issue might be salary, but I think if Providence could find a million to give a coach, St. John's can find that money as well.  Maybe that's not true; endowments are getting hit real hard, and who knows what will happen in the next year.

But saying Norm is the only guy to do the job he's done in fits and starts, I think, is just not true.  The negativity hurts the program, I believe that.  But just because people are negative doesn't mean the coach is good.  I'd make a political analogy, but I'm not starting that brouhaha on the board today.

Bball_fan, I must say that your (false)confidence is puzzling at best.  How have you made it this far in your life not cowering everytime you say or write something?

If I were you I would think over every decision long and hard...even something as easy as crossing a street or brushing your teeth.  You are dumb as sh*t.   That is fine, but where does the swagger come from?  You are more like Screech than Zack Morris.

I do NOT like the idea of bringing in Mark Jackson.  The man has never coached on any level and he's lived in LA for a while now which means his NYC ties at this point are minimal at best.  I saw him over the summer in LA and spoke to him a bit about the program.  He knew very little about our current players, and nothing about the recruits we were bringing in at the time (Omari, along with the 08 recruits).

Mark Jackson would be at the bottom of my list, but I would be a fan of him coming in as an assistant.  Also, I'm not sure he would take the job, because according to various people I've spoken to, he makes more at ESPN than he would as the head coach of St. John's.

first, to peter.  you say norm has done a job to improve the st john's name.  that's crazy.  i was at a party in the bronx yesterday and when someone found out thanks to my wife that i'm a st john's fan, i was asked by more than one person, "what happened to st john's, anyway".

the st john's name is a joke.  period.

bball_fan...the self imposed or otherwise ban is irrelevant.  baylor had a worse problem and a stricter ban.  i'll invite you to pick up a newspaper and turn to the back. you'll see that baylor's program is light years ahead of ours.  same with ohio state...and the list goes on.  how many sec...final fours and national championships did kentucky win within five years of pitino's arrival at a program that was practically given the death penalty.

i won't address the available coaches issue.  somehow, about three dozen coaches will have new jobs by november.

the posters aren't hurting the program.  the brain trust is.  it's known as being part of a men's club that kind of hangs around and laughs at fans while they have lifetime jobs.

they really laugh and slap each other high fives when they read your posts.

When the head coach is Bill Self, yes.  When your current head is Norm Roberts, I think almost everyone here would go with Mark.

I didn't say he did a great job.  He's done a job, and people seem to appreciate and mention it, even if he hasn't closed the big deal.  And I can accept that Mike Jarvis broke a number of connections and Norm has worked to get St. John's considered by local talent again.  It seems Norm wanted to do it on the strength of his hard work and dedication, and is only now coming to realize that he has to bring someone else in.

No, he hasn't improved the name among the fans and casual basketball fans.  Wins and tournament appearances are the only thing that brings that kind of notoriety.  And with a good game coach and a winning record, recruits can be brought in, and St. John's name will ring out like 10 years ago, and these years will be a sour memory.
