St. John's AD Issues a Statement - Norm Is Our Coach

St. John's AD: Norm Roberts is our coach
http://blogs.trb.com/sports/local/basketball/scoop/blog/2009/03/st_johns_ad_norm_roberts_is_ou.html

Chris Monasch, the St. John's athletic director, issued a statement through a school spokesman a little while ago on the status of Norm Roberts.

"You can't evaluate an entire program on one game, and our body of work this season is not complete with the possibility of our participation in a postseason tournament. Yesterday's game was disappointing, but we feel we have a solid nucleus in place, good players coming in, and our leading scorer returning in Anthony Mason Jr. Norm is our coach, and we support him."

Now, Monasch is not thinking of another team when he talks about the postseason. The College Basketball Invitational could have the Red Storm (16-17) in, though it's a longshot. And, according to a person close to the program, Monasch's words of support aren't a rubber stamp that Roberts will be back, though that looks likely.

Back to the games here at MSG...

He could have been a lot more definitive than that.  I take it as a slight positive.  It seems like he is buying time for Lance and/or a postseason berth.

You think this school would turn down a post season tournament?  Sorry, but that is just nuts.  We aren't Notre Dame football.

I could be reaching for straws, but I agree with you.  I also think this could be a wait-and-see approach on what transpires with Stephenson.

Honestly, I'd LOVE to grab Stephenson.  If, you're reading this Lance....  Most of us want to see you in Johnny red!  No doubt about it!

On the other hand, if this is contingent on Stephenson signing with St. John's....  Well....  I'd like to see Stephenson go elsewhere, as I want a new head coach in here like yesterday!  We've been held 'hostage' long enough and it's time to move on.

We've been obliterated far, far too many times this season alone, let alone the past few seasons.  I've said it before and I'll say it again.... When you've been taken behind the woodshed, as many times as Roberts has then the beatings doesn't hurt like they use to hurt.

It's no different than an unruly child who doesn't know anything other than his or her parent(s) beating his or her tail....  Heck!  After awhile those beatings have no effect on the child at the end of the day.

Roberts has had his arse taken behind the woodshed so much that those beatings has no effect on him.  It's business as usual!  Spank me like the dickens and I'll continue to do the same thing and get spanked again.  Nothing is gonna happen to me (meaning, I'm not gonna fired), so you can continue to spank me.  Continuous cycle, folks!

C'mon, St. John's administration!  Do all the fans (and, yourself) a favor and sever ties.  You don't have to admit it was a bad hire.  We all know that by now!  Just make a sound and smart decision in the firing (current coach) and the hiring of a new coach.

Otherwise, the media (as, many are chiming in on this mess) is gonna have a field day next season.

oops, messed that up, but at least that means its not set in stone yet...maybe if we dont get lance, or if a kid or two transfers they'll fire him

To make a prediction, I don't think SJU lands Lance and I'd be very surprised if the team doesn't have at least 2 transfers this year (most likely out of fine recruiting class of Roberts, Edmondson, and Wait).

It doesn't make sense for Monasch to fire Norm before he's given a fair chance to land Lance. If we fire him today, we don't gain very much. All of the coaches that would be replacements are still working for real programs.

Maybe they'll surprise us and fire Roberts if Lance goes to Kansas.

As far as transfers, we always chase a couple of kids out. Let's hope that the kids we chase out this time aren't going to blossom into solid players elsewhere, but that seems to be the trend.

Get away from Roberts, and you'll do better somewhere else.

i can see Q becoming a solid player with the right coach...ty and phil, haven't seen them really at all this year so cant say...but phil in his time on the court looked soft...even the big men that are really raw, show what they can be by throwing down a monster jam every once in a while, or swatting the ball into the stands

I was frankly more angry at Monasch last February when, after promising to evaluate Norm following the season, he gave a preemptive vote of approval, under the notion of helping us with recruiting. At that time, that Norm had zero recruits (as opposed to two players that demonstrated no business of being Big East players and a third, who shot 36% and had a .75 A/TO ratio).

On average, we only have 75-80 years to live and this pathetic joke of a tan-obsessed, third-rate AD has wasted five years on Norm Roberts, an overrated recruiter and a sub-par in-game tactician.
