It was a big day for Hofstra basketball in the Metropolitan area.

Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins was named the winner Wednesday of the 76th Haggerty Award as the 2008-09 All-Met Division I Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year, presented by the National Invitation Tournament and the Met Basketball Writers Association, and Tom Pecora won the Peter A. Carlesimo Coach of the Year award for the second time.

Freshman guard Mike Rosario of Rutgers was named rookie of the year.

Joining Jenkins on the All-Met first team: Jeremy Hazell, Seton Hall; Ryan Thompson, Rider; Paris Horne and D.J. Kennedy, St. John’s; Jaytornah Wisseh, LIU. Named to the second team: Rosario; Ryan Schneider, Marist; Robert Mitchell, Seton Hall; Darryl Crawford, Manhattan; Sean Baptiste, Fairleigh Dickinson; Wesley Jenkins, Saint Peter’s. Named to the third team: Jio Fontan, Fordham; Eugene Harvey, Seton Hall; Jason Miller, Columbia; Chris Smith, Manhattan; Scott Machado, Iona; Ricky Cadell, St. Francis.

This is a joke.  Hazell averaged 23 a game for a Big East team that finished over .500.  He should have been the unanimous POY.

I agree. Also what about the kid jeremy Chapell from Robert Morris-I dont see hime here at all? Maybe Robert Morris isnt considered in the Met area

Robert Morris is in PA not NJ.  It is next to Pittsburgh--WAY west.  It's actually over six hours and not four like I posted earlier. Calipari is from there.

Ah Thanks, dont know why I thought it was in Jersey. I do think their coach Mike Rice is on his way and will be somewhere bigger soon-possibly Fordham or better

So by NY Daily News' standards, we've got 3 returning first team all Metro players in Horne, DJ and Mason jr. (provided we count his junior year 07-08.

Plus an improving Sean Evans, a serviceable JB, and two high scoring guards coming in with more experience than typical freshman.

I wonder if that will be enough to put a decent non-conference schedule together for the first time in ages.
