The one player that may have had the most eyes on him during the Jordan Regional Game then anyone else was Omari Lawrence. The 6’4” wing man from the Bronx played his senior year at South Kent School in Connecticut after playing his first 3 years at St. Raymond’s. He is going to be attending St. John’s next year, and with the Red Storm struggling in the Big East, and there fans craving a winner, Lawrence will be counted on in a big way to help make St. John’s a winning team again.

After being a major part of St. Ray’s for 3 years, Lawrence and good friend Kevin Parrom decided to go away for there senior years and transferred to South Kent, and it’s a decision that Lawrence does not regret. “I have gotten a lot better. It was a smart move to go to South Kent.” Lawrence stated. “The CHSAA is a real good league, but at South Kent we were practicing against 7 footers and real strong guards, and then in our games we were playing much more physical players. I really feel my game has improved a lot in my year at South Kent.” Lawrence added.

He went on and played a fantastic game in front of the MSG crowd by putting in 25 points going 12 for 21 from the floor in his squads 129-120 win. With the added muscle to his frame that Lawrence has added this season, he feels it will be a plus going into the season with the Red Storm next year. “I needed to really get bigger and stronger. The Big East is the toughest and best league in the country and there are a lot of physical wing players, so I feel that I can now compete in getting to the rim using my strength.”

Lawrence feels that before getting to St. John’s next season that there are a couple things he needs to improve on to become an even better player. “I know I need to work on extending the range on my jump shot, and I need to get into better conditioning.” Lawrence admitted. He went on to finish by adding, “I expect to come in and step up right away next year. I am excited to get out there and help St. John’s get back to its winning ways.”


This young man seems to become a better recruit for us every day. He's got game, seems humble, and he always says the right thing. He seems very excited to come here, and I can't wait to see him take the court for us.

Aren't you the same person that is saying Lance makes St. John's an NCAA team next season. You must think a guard can have a MAJOR impact then...

because im talkin about an average guard...lance is obviously not average hes an exception...an immediate impact player...im not sure if omari is that, but who knows, he might prove me wrong.

I think Omari will be a big shot in the arm to this team as a freshman and will be a even a better player for us in the long haul. He's always been a winner and he's always done well against top flite competition. Look at his track record and combine that with his work ethic and attitude and I think we add a great student athlete to the St. John's program.

We have plenty of things to complain about and Omari is by far not one of them. Everyone is subject to criticism though but be fair and specific if you choose to do so. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and take what is said with a grain of salt. We have some people who base opinions off of first hand knowledge, those who base it off of what they've read, and some just make up some wild stuff sometimes. Take everything for what its worth.

I think by the end of his career he'll have 1,700+ points, so I personally think he'll be better than average.

well yes dave, but omari has never been average...if hes saying the kid is playing average now then hes still wrong...hes coming off injury, over his previous weight, and still threw up 25 in the jordan game...hes a 4 year player but he's a damn good 4 year player...hes gonna be on a team with a hell of a lot of sg's next year so idk how much he'll contribute, but the kids above average...solid 4 star recruit, definite top 60 player

I don't think we have a lot of SG's. Maybe you're used to not having anything in recent history but our guys last season were in the tops of the league in MPG. They need some rest and less might be more in terms of efficiency due to lack of fatigue. I think there are plenty of minutes to go around especially if we play as uptempo as I'd like us to.

having said that, my point was as a freshmen, in my opinion, he will have average performances. its only natrual, a young player, adjusting from prep school to college, different coaching strategies and philosopies. all i was saying is i wonder exactly how much he'll be able to contribute next year. my guess is he'll put up solid numbers against the non big-east scheduale. i think he might struggle once we get to the big east games but i also feel he has the potentiol to have a few big breakthrough games. i was just trying to think out loud how hes gonna be able to contribute.

Dave, that's 7 players who all play the SG/SF position.  Granted, if Lance ends up coming here next year, he may wind up playing PG.  But that's still an awful lot of players who play the same position.  And I'm sure that the veterans (Mason Jr., Kennedy, and Horne) aren't gonna be too happy about reducing their minutes too much.  Either way, Norm is gonna have a very tough job next year finding minutes for everyone.
