There are a couple reasons why coaches would take Stephenson – and Miller falls into none of these categories.
1. To help save your job (ex. St. John’s coach Norm Roberts)
2. You are an unproven coach who is following a near-legend (ex. Memphis coach Josh Pastner) and are in desperate need of talent.
3. He is the one piece missing from a potential national championship (ex. Kansas coach Bill Self prior to landing Xavier Henry)
The bottom line is that Miller has job security – and it’s not as if Stephenson will be the difference-maker in winning a national championship at Arizona next season. Sure, he might be able to extend the streak of NCAA tournament appearances – but at what price. He’s a one-and-done kid (or an overseas player) who could do a program – and it’s other players - more harm than good.
That’s why there’s a shortage of high-major suitors for a player who is arguably among the elite in the country.
Arizona will likely become the latest to say, “Thanks, but no thanks†to the talented New Yorker.
