Elite Camp
« on: June 25, 2009, 02:21:40 PM »
Has there been any talk this summer about St.John's holding an elite camp in August?

A lot of our competitors are now holding them and it has proven to be successful at other programs. Two of Roberts' closest friends in the business, Self and Gillispie, were able to land players after holding them last year. Now, they were also accused of funneling money to parents and AAU coaches of players, but, as with any practice, one doesn't need to push the limits, while still accomplishing the goals.

It would be a chance to get the 2010 and 2011 targets (which needs to be a massive class) at Taffner and CA at the same time and make the pitch to them that we're improving and looking for them to be the next phase in the road back to the top of the Big East. Get them used to playing there, hanging out together, and check out the improvements. It certainly can't hurt.

No, a team camp and Coach X's camp are generally revenue generators for the program. In the case of a team camp, you hope to also have some local recruits show up for purposes of recruiting, but it isn't nearly as targeted as an "elite camp."

At an Elite Camp, a top program will send out invitations to their, say, top 30 recruits (at St. John's, Roberts may need to send out 45-60). They hope to get 15-25 kids to accept the invitation to come. The NCAA mandates that the kid pays $100 minimum (which is, not surprisingly, what the programs charge). When they arrive, they're surrounded by fellow high caliber recruits (who coincidentally are all being recruited by STJ), current assistants, and usually former players. If the program already has some verbals, you can bet they'll be there to help out with recruiting (may even wind up as roommates with the school's top targets). Some of the players will already have offers, while others will try to compete for an offer. At some of the shadier camps, they'll hire a dad or an AAU coach (whomever the coaches believe will be a point man for a recruit) to work as a counselor. It can be an intense recruiting pitch to deal with for a 16/17 year old kid.

At St. John's, they'd want to bring in Pinkston, Lamb, etc. and a lot of the 2011 kids they're hoping to land.

Glad you were able to confirm.
Good luck to Norm and the staff in bringing as much talent to Jamaica in August as possible. It'd be nice if Artest could make an appearance as well.

According to a quote on Zagsblog (end of the article), the St. John's Elite Camp is July 1st.  Get on the grind, coaches!

Since most elite camps take place over a few days and are national in nature, I was hoping for  something a little longer than 4 hours at night and just the local yokels, but it's a first step.
It's a start and certainly can't hurt.

Kyrie Irving will be at the camp.
My cousin said he thought Kyrie was coming last night.
Getting a top ten talent to come is a coup for Norm and Quartlebaum.
Will you be able to take any pictures or, perhaps, get some names of other kids that decided to attend? Zagoria mentioned Mike Taylor was coming.

Unfortunately I'm detained at work so I will not be there. I do have some eyes and ears over there though.

Hopefully, those eyes and ears will do as good a job as you would've done-had work not interfered with JJ.

On Wednesday evening, St. John's Red Storm held their first Elite Camp on their Queens, NY campus.

Kadeem Jack is on the Red Storm's radar
The one day, invite only event was well received as 35 of the top players in the tri-state area participated in game-speed drills as well as scrimmages.

With only one scholarship open for the 2010 class, the Red Storm is also taking a close look at the 2011 and 2012 class. This fact explained the wide spectrum of classes represented on the court. The Camp was conducted by Red Storm Head Coach Norm Roberts along with his assistant coaches. Justin Burrell, Sean Evans, Malik Boothe, Anthony Mason Jr., Dele Coker, Paris Horne, Rob Thomas and Quincy Roberts representing the Red Storm players also assisted at the Camp.

Thinking BIG

The Johnnies have guards and they are loaded with juniors. That is a good thing but with only Mason Jr. in his last season, the Red Storm would ideally like to recruit a big man. A big-man that is definitely on the Red Storms radar is Kadeem Jack. "He (Jack) runs the floor well and has a non-stop motor," says a source close to situation.

Indeed Jack performed well at the Elite Camp, especially on defense. A steady diet of blocked shots were was on the menu for the rising senior as will as excellent finishes in transition. Jack also did well in drills that involved contact and boxing out.

JayVaughn Pinkston has his eye on St. John's
Another player at the camp was JayVaughn Pinkston. Pinkston was OK in drills but played much better during the scrimmages. Pinkston did however make some noise during the drills when he did a post up move to get around Sean Evans and finished strong with a dunk. "He's a beast. That's why he's the best player in New York," says a source close to the situation.

Zagoria wrote this at 11:22 this morning.

ST. JOHN’S ELITE CAMP

The St. John’s Elite Camp is going on right now and the Johnnies have a number of talented locals on campus, including Kyrie Irving (St. Patrick), Jayvaughn Pinkston (Loughlin), Devon Collier (St. Anthony), Mike Taylor (Boys & Girls),  Myles Mack (Paterson Catholic, Kyle Anderson (Paterson Catholic), Kadeem Jack (St. Raymond’s) and Corey Edwards (Christ the King).

Speaking of Pinkston, he will remain at Loughlin and not attend Oak Hill (Va.) Academy, according to Kimani Young of New Heights. Pinkston had considered playing for Steve Smith at Oak Hill.
