500/1
« on: August 08, 2009, 02:39:12 PM »
I spent the last two weeks in Las Vegas and I managed to hit almost every sports book both on and off the Strip, but there was only one, The Venetian, that put odds on St. John's likelihood of winning the 2010 Men's NCAA Championship.  The Venetian set it at 500/1.

To put it in context, some sports books put odds on as many as 150 teams, while the general average was between ninety and one hundred teams.

Louisville averaged roughly from 13/2 to 8/1.
West Virginia had a very wide range, but was generally in the 30/1 neighborhood.
Villanova was typically between 20-25/1.
Notre Dame was between 22/1 and 40/1.
Georgetown was generally in the 35/1 area.
Connecticut ranged from 22/1 to 45/1.
Marquette ranged from 100/1 to 200/1.
Seton Hall was mostly in the 150/1 range.
Pitt ranged from 25/1 to 45/1.
DePaul was routinely 450-500/1.
Syracuse was generally 40-45/1.
Providence was 200/1 in the limited venues that put odds on them.
Cincy was generally 150-250/1 in the venues that supplied odds for them.

The only two Big East schools that I couldn't find even one line on were USF and Rutgers.

If anyone would like some of the odds on other programs, I can get them.

Was 500-1 the lowest odds you could get?  If Depaul was 500-1, it seems that was the max.  Curious what Kentucky would be,  as well as Duke and texas.

500/1 was literally from the only sports book, the Venetian, who would put a line out for St. John's. DePaul went as high as 1000/1, but the vast majority had it at 500/1.

I have sheets from all of the sports books at home, but, off the top of my head, Kentucky was as low as 4/1 (I'll check which casino) to as high as 7/1. Duke ranged from 8/1 to as high as 15/1, but was generally 8-10/1. Texas ranged from the high teens to 30/1, but was generally in the low 20s.

Kansas ranged from 3/1 to 5/1. Michigan St. ranged from 12/1 to 22/1.  The people I spoke with said Kentucky was flooded with money after Calipari, Wall et al joined and Georgetown and Florida were not drawing much interest across the board and thus kept falling. UNC was slipping slightly down to 12-18/1. Among BE schools, WV and Villanova were getting more money and thus moving their original odds, which I can also get you.

Can you reverse play those odds?  Like, can you lay $500, for example, to win a $1?
