Mount Vernon junior point guard Jabarie Hinds suffered an ankle injury Saturday but is still picking up high-major Division I interest.

Playing with the Westchester Hawks against All-Ohio Red in the Pitt Jam Fest, Hinds rolled his ankle on what Mount Vernon coach Bob Cimmino called a “freak play.”

“He was going for a break-away layup and came down in a freak way on his own ankle,” Cimmino said Monday morning. “He’s in an air cast. The X-rays were negative but he will be sidelined for a while now.”

Prior to the injury, the 5-11, 150-pound Hinds had drawn recent interest from Florida State, Oklahoma State and Villanova.
“Florida State asked if it was too late to get involved and I said, ‘No,’” Cimmino said.

As for Villanova, Cimmino said: “They have a unique way of recruiting. They’re very good at it. They don’t come on like gangbusters. But a kid of Jabarie’s talents they gotta be interested.”

Hinds, the No. 19 point guard in the Class of 2011, also lists Louisville, Virginia, Wake Forest and UNLV among his leaders, Cimmino said.

“His timetable is to take everything in over the AAU season and then sit down around Aug . 1 and set up his fall trips,” Cimmino said.

Hinds lists Oklahoma State, Louisville, Wake Forest, Villanova, Florida State, UConn, Iona, Virginia, Miami, and UNLV amongst the schools recruiting him, noting that there are others as well. Villanova and UConn are the only two on the list who have yet to offer.

Im sure some were hating on the Gaels too back when Jeff Ruland and Gary Springer chose the maroon and gold

Times have changed my friend.  College basketball recruiting is no longer in the 80's.

One can dream yes.  But I think Garee's role is to keep the lower level Mt Vernon players from going elsewhere and keeping them on North Ave where they can have very successful careers.

Absolutely agree. Would be something if Hinds followed, tough to see that happening though.

It is not always easy to keep top talent in state, just ask ex-St. John's Head Coach Norm Roberts. Jabarie Hinds '11 of Mount Vernon (NY) is one player that could be tough to keep in the Empire State.

Hinds recently added Boston College to a long list of suitors that also includes Cincinnati, Florida State, Iona, Louisville, Miami, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, St. John’s, UConn, UNLV, Villanova, Wake Forest and West Virginia.

“He’s just taking everything in,” Mount Vernon coach Bob Cimmino said. “He will chop the list the first week in August and make plans for official visits.”

Calhoun needs to just retire...no one wants to touch UConn right now.  Good luck to Jabarie, hope he's practicing "Country Roads"

Having Pat Sellers, formerly their best recruiter, fall on his sword for Calhoun hasn't helped either

Sure thing, Dave. I wrote Blue's italicized message out below the would-be tweet.
