And we still don't know it is.
I wonder if it will make any sense.

Here are the possible names of it which will be voted on

The next step in the process will be to name the mascot, which will be voted upon by current St. John's students. From Monday, Sept. 21 to Friday, Sept. 25, students will be able to vote via e-mail through St. John's Central. The five name nominations are "Bolt," "Johnny," "Spirit," "Stormy" and "Surge," though students will also have the opportunity to write in a vote.

What horrendous name choices.

Most fans will probably want to "bolt" once this yet-another lame mascot makes an appearance.

Stormy? That was Mrs. Bucky Dent. Hardly a macho moniker.

I'm fine with the thunderbird.  I think thats the best of the choices that were made available.

Still miss the redmen though.

I would have voted for the flash looking guy. I think it would have been a neater concept to have a "New York Minute Man" with the hustle of the city traveling everywhere. Also Queens has always been known for a large shopping district on Jamaica Avenue. Even more so to keep our Redmen name because of all the tribes that used to trade there but thats done with.

Anyways I would have went for a more historic approach and tried to deeply root the mascot within the history of the community instead of trying to make it more modern with the name "Storm" Here is some history on the founding of Jamaica

http://www.gjdc.org/aboutjamaica.html

P.S. We don't even acknowledge the fact we are in Jamaica, Queens anymore. St. John's is in "Queens" because Jamaica wasn't as attractive.

Even thinking about it we could have done something involving......

-railroads. Jamaica Station/LIRR or something

-some kind of melting pot idea since Queens and St. John's is so diverse.

-anything to do with St. Vincent De Paul and vincentian brotherhood

I'm just thinking 5 min off the top of my head and I think I have something better than a Dog, Bear, Horse, Lightning Bolt, or Bird.

Maybe it'll just be the car and not the winged bird.

Now I'm not completely behind the whole thunderbird idea to begin with but if I were St. John's I'd put this video on my facebook, youtube, and anywhere else I could. If your overall goal is to market and promote your new mascot then put him/her all over the net.

Instead I needed to install an upgrade of microsoft silver spotlight onto my computer (some people don't like downloading things onto their computer) which took a few minutes.

Little things like this is where I feel we drop the ball sometimes. I think St. John's is doing a much better job on a grand scale from lets say 4 years ago however we could be doing better(like most things in life). The Twitter/Facebook thing is a huge step for St. John's and I've been checking out other schools and we're way far ahead in this department so thumbs up to St. John's in that regard.

I'd like to see anyone come up with  REAL idea of what they should do.  You're all so quick to judge but you can't come up with anything better.  Tbird represents american indian heritage since they can't be the Red Men anymore.  LET GO OF THE RED MEN - it's not ok to call us the 'black men' is it???  NO - it's the same thing.  Stop being negative everyone and support SJU for once!

Disagreeing with the University's decisions isn't being negative. It's ok not to agree with everything. Everyone is here because they support St. John's and we want to see the University move in the right direction.

If we sat here and raved that everything the University does is great than we would be of no aid.

I personally offered a few ideas to the direction could have taken to the new mascot. I think it could have been more properly planned. Getting 6 animals and tossing St. John's sweaters on them putting "Thunder" in front of everything is not my idea of proper planning.
