I'd like to see anyone come up with  REAL idea of what they should do.  You're all so quick to judge but you can't come up with anything better.  Tbird represents american indian heritage since they can't be the Red Men anymore.  LET GO OF THE RED MEN - it's not ok to call us the 'black men' is it???  NO - it's the same thing.  Stop being negative everyone and support SJU for once!

Do you even know why they were called the Redmen?  It had nothing to do with american indians. Its was because they always had red uniforms. What does a thunderbird have to do with american indian heritage anyway?  Your "black men" analogy is so off-base its ridiculous.

The reason you step away from a name like Redmen is that it also connotes a pejorative term for native Americans.  Doesn't help to have a logo with a dribbling Indian, either.

I suppose St. John's could be the Reds but then people would think it was a team of Communists, and communism's dead.

Now I'm not completely behind the whole thunderbird idea to begin with but if I were St. John's I'd put this video on my facebook, youtube, and anywhere else I could. If your overall goal is to market and promote your new mascot then put him/her all over the net.

Instead I needed to install an upgrade of microsoft silver spotlight onto my computer (some people don't like downloading things onto their computer) which took a few minutes.

Little things like this is where I feel we drop the ball sometimes. I think St. John's is doing a much better job on a grand scale from lets say 4 years ago however we could be doing better(like most things in life). The Twitter/Facebook thing is a huge step for St. John's and I've been checking out other schools and we're way far ahead in this department so thumbs up to St. John's in that regard.

As you can see above, St. John's now has the video on their facebook about a little over an hour after my post. I'm glad the voice of the people of Johnny Jungle does not fall onto deaf ears. I know they read the site(as well as others). Good Job St. John's!

I think they stepped away from the name because they weren't savvy enough to explain it's origin.

Or how that Indian guy logo wasn't really an Indian guy.

I bet you the first time Surfin Bird flaps its wings, St Joes will file another lawsuit against us for stealing their idenity just like they sued us to stop using the initals SJU. BTW, when I was in High School in Philadelphia, my Senior English teacher one day spent the entire class time how he hated how ESPN puts the term PA next to St Joes because ESPN recognizes the true St Joes to be in Patchouge, I think, and how ESPN used to give SJU rights to St Johns before spelling out the whole name for both St Joes and St Johns, geez talk about how pathetic Philly is

Its a mascot.  Personally I think it was the best choice.  Lets start winning and the mascot will become legendary!

I stand corrected.  how silly of me.  Of course our mascot would have something to do with native american heritage.   :D
