embarrassing
« on: December 05, 2009, 04:21:07 PM »
yet again, this team is completely embarrassing itself on national tv...joke on defense, joke on offense...i really wanted to believe this team was different, hell, they even had me going for the first 10 min or so of this game, but this is just hard to watch, and makes me embarrassed to be a fan of this program yet again...18-3 run, with our only points coming off a wide open 3, turnovers, balls being ripped away from our players hands, shots being taken in our players faces without hesitation, cant go inside, cant penetrate, cant hit jumpers, cant rebound, cant box out, cant contest shots...the only thing i feel bad about at this point in the season is that i let myself get excited for st johns basketball

I completely disagree. The guys fought back and were only down by 6. Missing JB for the whole game....come on. Lost by 9 on the road in their place.

I agree.  I actually got excited in spots.  When we pulled within 4 I screamed so loudly I scared my dog :D

I'm not one for moral victories but I wouldn't say it was embarrassing...it will be embarrassing if they lose to Georgia, Fordham, or Hofstra.

no actually, bc they didnt do any of those things i said they werent doing...they didnt fight back either...duke was playing like a bunch of kids who didnt care anymore and werent focused, bc they took us as a joke after that run...once they LET US back, they closed the door again...the game was never in jeopardy

i asked last week how we played offensively and defensively from people who had seen the team play and most importantly, could we compete for 40 minutes without major lapses...the answer is still, after 5 years, no

I agree there were too many lapses but your post before this is a ridiculous assessment of what actually happened.

Duke took us as a joke and that's why we cut it to 4 after trailing by 16? Duke taking a team lightly? After a non-conference loss? At home?

I know with the amount of times ESPN showed Coach K pumping the crowd up that you had to see it at least once. They were up for this game the whole time. So was STJ. To say otherwise is ridiculous. The difference was the quality of players, the home court advantage, and yeah coaching. But to say Duke stopped caring or even thinking that Coach K would let (especially today) that happen is plain dumb.

yeah, they showed the clip of coach k at least 3 times. the same clip. talk about overkill and broadcasters all over duke's nuts. im just glad we didn't have to hear dick vitale broadcast this game.

I just watched the game SJD, and I think you're flat wrong.  I think there were serious lapses - they lost their g*ddamned composure in the first half, and they still don't defend like crazy people... and I think the staff seriously has to address the issue of a PG who isn't a real scoring threat.

And yes, there are things that could be done better.

But I think, for once in a long time, Duke actually gave a really strong effort against St. John's.  They didn't mail in that game, like how they fell the f--- asleep last year, or calmly blew our guys out two years ago.

I don't think this was embarrassing in the least bit. We struggled for stretches, there is things we could have done better, but for an early December game on the road we played pretty well. I don't want to play up the tough card(there were stretched we didn't play tough which cost us) but we showed more than we have in years past. We fought back and it wasn't in garbage time.

We showed some promising things that I'm looking forward to in conference play. Nothing to hang your head about.

I don't usually believe in moral victories, but today was certainly one for the Johnnies.  Boothe played his ass off and I don't think many PG's in the country could have directed a better game. He was tough as nails and pushed the ball with authority.  He even made an open three to make Smith pay for being over-aggressive on D.

DJ was the f*cking man.  He was the best player on the court.  All I can say is wow.  He got my Nolan Smith---a POINT GUARD--and he made Singler--a future NBA player--look stupid trying to stay in front of him.  I think he realized today that he simply cannot be stopped when he has the mindset to get to the lane and his presence passing the ball was awesome.  Bilas loves the kid.

Coker played exceptional.  His size alone changed the game for Duke inside.  When he wasn't in, the Duke players were fearless.  When he was in their they were doing floaters and using pump fakes or fading away from the basket.  Great performance.  If he can just stay out of foul trouble he can really contribute.

Also, when we pushed, they had absolutely no answer.  Wow.   We got points in bunches and that will only get better when Mase comes back with his length on D and his rebounding.  Hardy was fast as hell up and down the court.

Biggest mistake was Norm pulling DJ when we got it down to 6-8 around the nine minute mark. DJ was simply unstoppable that point and needed to remain on the court.

Overall, I was proud of the team.  That is something I haven't felt for years.

yea thats what happens...duke plays hard, opens a huge lead, then laugh and think, wow, these kids on st johns are the same joke theyve been for the last 5 years, and start playing loose and taking bad shots, and being careless and let the team back into the game...im sorry to break it to everyone on here who jumped the gun at a 6-0 start and wins over siena and temple, thinking we are going to ncaa's, but today proved this team, although better than last year, is no ncaa tournament team...as proud as you can be for the guys clawing back into the game today to lose by a respectable margin, how proud are you with how poorly they played during that 16-0 run when they lost the game...good teams (ncaa teams) break outta those runs and dont let the game get away...they put themselves in position where a run gets them back to a tie or lead...st johns plays so that a run  brings them to within distance where ANOTHER RUN brings them to a tie or lead...5 years later, whats changed guys?

Lost by 9 to the 5th ranked team in the nation  with a ridiculous home court advantage and a hall of fame coach.
Cmon now

If you want, I cant help save you further embarassment and delete this thread.

I don't know that they're an NCAA team - I won't go there - but in the last 5 years, they wouldn't have been as close as 4 points.  They're not top 25 level, but are they borderline NCAA level?  This is the kind of performance that the mid- level ACC competitors have against Duke.

And St. John's shot 50% against these guys.  You're entitled to your opinion.  And I'm in no way saying this team is as good as better St. John's teams.  I also fully acknowledge how sad it is to say we were competitive and have that as a good thing.  But accepting the program for what it is, they were the kind of competitive that makes me think St. John's won't be -10 in every loss.

dont touch my posts, see baldi while your happy with what happened today im not...explain to me how it wasnt embarrassing...explain to me, why, after 5 years, i still have to be happy with st johns playing tough for 10 min, playing like crap for 10-15 min, then playing tough for the rest of the game....its like a sandwich of good play with a heap of bad in the middle, and it fools fans like you and everyone else bashing me right now into thinking it was a good game...but explain, please...explain why i should be optimistic for the rest of the season when this team, which has suffered many blowout losses over the last 5 years, still cant stop a team from going on huge run that takes them completely out of the game...explain to me why i need to smile bc they fought back to lose by a certain margin...explain how thats gonna get the committee to give us a bid...last i checked they dont give at large bids for almosts, or for good effort...you can check my post from last week...i didnt care if we lost this game by 15, i just wanted to see consistent defensive pressure throughout the game, a good set offense, and no huge runs...if they did that id be the first one on here praising them and saying maybe this is finally the year we dance...but yet again, please explain the joy you and everyone else seems to have right now, bc its lost to me
