What Would You Prefer?
« on: January 03, 2010, 11:16:35 PM »
We all know Calipari leaves each of his programs on probation...Memphis, UMass...would you prefer clean Norm with continued performances like today...or prefer dirty Cal who could get us to the Final Four only to be placed on probation and have the Final Four and victories ultimately erased?

I think everyone wants to win. You don't need to be dirty to win either.

Who wants to deal with PROBATION....then everyone is cryin after the Final 4 run...we can't get anyone to come here. And you feel a little dirty when it is all said and done.

What probation is Memphis on now?

If they are not on Probation then they are giving up games (wins).

I believe they had to renounce their Final Four and victories because of their Derrick Rose situation.

Why does everyone act like the only options are Norm - squeaky clean and loses a lot or Cal - filthy but wins and leaves programs decimated or in trouble?

There are plenty of coaches who WIN, do so cleanly, or relatively cleanly...lets get ourselves one of them.

Other than the usual suspects, Mckillop AND McCaffrey, who should be considered?

Too early for the "who should the new coach be" thread, IMO. But I will take bait.  I can rattle off a lot of reasonable suspects. Understand that I am not taking into account realism or certain goals the school seems to have - like loyalty, possible cost, and desire to remain clean i.e. no inducements for scads of top recruits:

McKillop wouldn't be on my list but McCaffery would.
Steve Alford's been doing a job at New Mexico for a while, but isn't local.

Actually, most of my choices are midwestern, so they likely won't be considered (Brad Brownell at Wright State for example) ... I'm looking at coaching over NY connections, really.

Maybe Mike Lonergan at Vermont, or that name that keeps coming up like a bad penny, Tom Pecora.  Maybe Kevin Willard at Iona, but he hasn't proven himself as a coach yet.

Here's on for you Peter - Jim Christian at TCU.  Affordable, local and did a great job at Kent St.

Yeah, I forgot Jim Christian.  People like him, like they like Jim Cluess... but Christian's team is 7-7 and he's only been there for 2 yrs.  They've lost to Northern Colorado.  The other teams are name teams, but not that good.

He did have quite a bit of success at TCU though.

It's all premature in any event and unless the PC loss becomes the norm this year (no pun intended), I don't see Norm going anywhere.  If he does get the boot, I'd like to see Seth Greenberg at or near the top of the list of candidates.

Howabout Brian Gregory?  No chance FH would shell out for Pitino now that he has had his name tarnished morally, right?

I'd like to get a local guy in here, but it doesnt matter what we think anyway. Norm will be around, St Johns will knock off 2 big teams and get in a postseason tourny and he'll coach his seniors next year

This is out of no where...but I've always liked the way Chris Lowery (So Illinois) has coached.  I have no idea where his roots are....but his teams play great defense and actually run nice half court sets!!!

I feel dirty after watching Norm coach our team. It's like someone took a cr@p all over my TV

Chris Lowery is all midwest. He's from Evansville or something, he played at Southern Illinois.  His teams are a little stiff in the halfcourt, kind of slow, but I could take a shine to him.

Brian Gregory's teams are not as good as you think.  They're good, but I have some concerns about how a style dependent on pressing defense ONLY would work in the Big East. And sometimes his teams can't score.  If you slow them down and play competent defense, they look like some of the Red Storm's bad offensive moments.

Jim Christian has been at TCU for 2 years, and has gone 21-24. His good years were with Kent State, 137-59.

Lon Kruger would warrant a look, but he wouldn't take the job.

Gotta stay local.  Even if a further off coach is brought in he gotta get some staff with NY ties or St. John's NY connections would need to be rebuilt.  Gotta also land a big name soon. Too many good NY players have the johnnies in their final 4 choices and pick a succesful team over the past years, Kemba Walker, Lance Stephenson, Mookie Jones, Kevin Jones, Sylven Laandesber, and more recently Maurice Harkless.

Makes me even more mad when these guys go to UCONN instead.
