Who wants to deal with PROBATION....then everyone is cryin after the Final 4 run...we can't get anyone to come here. And you feel a little dirty when it is all said and done
I feel dirty after watching Norm coach our team. It's like someone took a cr@p all over my TV

Sometimes i feel like destroying my TV after our 5th empty possession in a row due to turnovers, ill advised charges, moving screens etc etc.....

Why does everyone act like the only options are Norm - squeaky clean and loses a lot or Cal - filthy but wins and leaves programs decimated or in trouble?

There are plenty of coaches who WIN, do so cleanly, or relatively cleanly...lets get ourselves one of them.

Other than the usual suspects, Mckillop AND McCaffrey, who should be considered?

McCaffrey.  He has the system New York City kids want to play in.  He recruits NYC well.  He finds great talent to bring to a nothing school of like 2,000 students in Albany, NY.

If McCaffrey took over next year, I would think Sweet 16 for sure.

He has them playing well now.  They are 11-4 (4-0) after the rough start, including wins against St. Joe's and Rider.

He can tell kids about winning and about the tournament.  About getting kids to the next level.  Hasbrouck had a stint with the Miami Heat.  He has developed a technically sound big man.

Would I prefer over the worst coach on BE history.
Anyone.

I love Pecora. I also like the guy at Iona.
I just hope they've learned a lesson about hiring an assistant coach.

So far, we've hired two. Mahoney and Norm Roberts.
Mahoney actually had more success.

The thing about these threads - and about the thinking that seems to go on with Athletic Directors when they are choosing new coaches - is that people think in absolutes. Not every assistant coach can't coach, but perhaps the decision-makers' criteria/ emphasis on certain criteria is flawed.  Not every New York guy can convince players to stay (and not every New York guy can coach).

But also: not every coach wants to be in New York City, or in the Big East (perhaps unless they were handed U Conn or Pitt).

I do think, if a change is made, it's much easier to sell a coach with experience (hell, even winning experience at a lower level).

How many city kids has he recruited..?  Rossitter and the other kid from Staten Island.?

Also, SWEET 16 next year Marillac, you make some seriously outrageous comments at times. The team has a crappy point guard and crappy center, they are not going anywhere this year or next. Unless of course, Norm got a serious stud recruit in here but we all know that has never happened and will not happen for next season.

Our Junior dominated team got run off the court in the 2nd half, at home, this past weekend by a team with 3 - 4 first years kids playing major minutes. The fact that they will be Seniors next year means absolutely nothing, they proved this past weekend that their experience is not a big advantage for this team.

Gotta stay local.  Even if a further off coach is brought in he gotta get some staff with NY ties or St. John's NY connections would need to be rebuilt.  Gotta also land a big name soon. Too many good NY players have the johnnies in their final 4 choices and pick a succesful team over the past years, Kemba Walker, Lance Stephenson, Mookie Jones, Kevin Jones, Sylven Laandesber, and more recently Maurice Harkless.

Makes me even more mad when these guys go to UCONN instead.
How many of the nation's elite programs depend exclusively or even primarily on talent within a 25 mile radius of their campuses?

A few years ago, some St. John's fans were begging for LI product and professional recruiter, Paul Hewitt. Tonight, the Yellow Jacket fans would send that loser to Jamaica, Queens in a limo.

They've got to bring in a guy who can immediately command respect from current players, recruits, and fans. I believe they need to hire a new, veteran AD to sell a higher caliber head coach on St. John's and bring fresh ideas from an administrative standpoint. That castoff from the Jersey Shore needs to go find a low-major school, preferably with a Tanning major, to run.

You'll get static for that idea.  A lot of folks are concentrating on what St. John's was in the 80s and 90s.  And there's some merit in locking down a lot of NY talent - some good ballers in the area.  BUT in the last 15-20 years... I don't know if that talent is necessarily elite level... and it's hard to get ALL those guys to turn down UNC and Duke, along with Pitt and U Conn.

But St. John's should get to the point where they're getting talent from the nearby cities - Philly, NY/NJ, the northeast, maybe DC... which the staff has actually done.

If there is a new coach, he needs to get those top-level guys.  And he needs to be able to coach as one of his proven strengths; I've always thought the recruiter label is a little overrated.  Some guys are, certainly, good at forming relationships.  But if you don't have something strong to sell - and you've got a lot of roster turnover - no amount of relationship building will convince New Heights and St. Ben's and Mount Vernon to send you talent.

I don't really care where the guy is from.

I think this "NY guy" thing is load of crap. We had NY guys in Mahoney and Frascilla. Jarvis was a coach who wanted players to be treated like students not superstars.

And for the record, where is that little prick Jason Fraser now? Exactly.

If we had a coach that a great plan for teams like Cornell and Providence,
we'd have won those games. Norm used to say, "sometimes, a kid says he's going to do something, and he doesn't."

The program would be just fine with a Midwest coach who could coach. Kids avoided us at first because of the pending sanctions. Now they avoid Norm.
He was brought here for recruiting, and he's missed out on every big name he's targeted.

It's pathetic. Years ago I used to buy 4 seats and bring clients and friends.
You can't offer a ticket to a client now. They have no interest.

Unless ofcourse, they went to Uconn, Nova or Syracuse.
Their alumni are not a disgrace.
