What's most important in new coach

OK, since the most common thread on the three boards has been about who should replace Norm if and when he goes, I want to get your opinion on a question. I don’t want specific names suggested, there are literally hundreds of threads for that.

Please just vote and answer the question and a little reasoning why would be appreciated.

We need a guy who can coach. I could care less if he can recruit.

 Agree with Poison.  these kids, while talented, need to be taught and learn the game. Gotta feel for some of these guys that just wasted 3 years of their basketball life.  I want an X and O's guy.

Agree.  He's gotta be able to COACH.  I prefer someone who's done that and won at the mid-major or big time level in college basketball.  Any of the names you're hearing I'm all for.  And someone who was FIRED at the big time level....stay away for the most part...unless they won elsewhere and it can be argued that a new situation might help them (See Alford, Amaker....But not WELSH).

recruiting is just as important...especially now...if a good coach comes in and wins, next year recruits arent just going to flock to st johns...and we lose mostly everyone after next year, so whoever we get, better be a decent salesman as well

I once had a conversation about Jim Boeheim with Lou.
Lou said he's boring and even comes across rude at times.

BUT, that he's a great teacher, and the way he develops the "kids" should earn him more respect.

That year Boeheim took John Wallace and 4 bumbs to
the finals. Kids started lining up to play for Boeheim without much effort.
He didn't have to kiss Carmelo's ass to get him to gobto Syracuse.

He just pointed to all of the different types of players that he's found to play the 3 over the years. Some were top 10 recruits like Billy Owens, and others were compete no names like Preston Shumpert and Damone Brown, but regardless of their press clippings, they all left with a basketball career ahead of them.

As we've learned at SJU, press clippings guarantee nothing,
but a coach Xs and Os coach can win with what he's got.

Fran was a dynamic personality, and he lost to Detroit with Lopez, Hamilton, Postell and Artest. 4 NBA guys.

First, we need someone the administration will actually hire. That means he must fill the requirement of running a clean program, and he must be cheap enough. I agree with those that say we need someone who can teach basketball, but he must also be able to recruit players who will fit into his style of play. That's where Bonheim and Coach K excel. (Coach K is not a great coach--he just has his pick of kids who fit into his style) I would also like to see a big name that would draw kids to the school and someone with local ties. My pick? Mark Jackson for 2 or 3 years with Tim Cleuss as the heir apparent

That was an unfortunate loss but Fran wasn't a great bench coach, and he has a lousy personality.

I am really surprised at you! Isn't what you want what Norm was supposed to be? Recruiting is tricky and far from an exact science. Get someone in here who can actually coach and the rest will take care of itself.

mark jackson??????? why... hell if thats the case why wouldnt mullin be the guy. he has actually ran a team i dont think mark jackson was ever involved as a coach or gm. the kids will come for mullin before mark jackson

After failing with a coach that came in with a near 80% record of losing, a history of winning seems to be the most important single factor to me.

Recruiting is so huge too.  I would love a monster name/recruiter. I believe Pitino will be more available than most think right now.  He is in an uncomfortable position in L'ville and doesn't have his typical talented roster for this year or next.

I'd be happy with a more realistic possibility like McCaffey.

The only two qualities that matter in a head coach 1) Can he close the deal in recruitng? and 2) Can he coach em up once he gets players?? Choosing a staff will be vital because the assistants are the ones who identify and make contact with players. They are a family's first impression of a coaching staff but the head man must close the deal

JPM,

I would value your feedback, if appropriate on how much of a loss Kimani was to the program. Clearly his AAU team has had a good number of D1 players we would love to have. I just felt thed inability to retain him was another jolt to the program.Thanks!
