Monasch firing rumors
« on: February 04, 2010, 08:58:40 PM »
I've been a little outside of the loop lately, but why are some posting like Monasch is getting fired?

I do know for a fact that Harrington and the people around him were high on Norm as late as last March.  Monasch didnt hire Norm.

What money, man?  I see no real reason to fire Monasch unless he wanted to keep Norm while others in the athletic department want him gone.  Or unless someone wants Chris Mullin to be the AD.  I just don't see it, the rumor hasn't been mentioned by anyone except a couple on the message boards, and isn't everything else going well?  A revamp of Carnesecca,  successful women's team and men's soccer among others.

Peter, it's been mentioned by one person. I'd call it more ramblings/guesses than rumors.

Only one sport at SJU has ever had a chance to turns profit.
Basketball could produce money.

Norm has cleaned up the program off the court. Fans, and donors like myself don't care in year 6 that it's clean if it's also terrible.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the devil you know. Under Mike Jarvis, I was pretty happy with our program. Over time, I wasn't happy with the way he recruited NY, but to his credit a lot of these kids were prissy little girly men. I don't blame Jarvis one bit for not wanting to kiss Jason Fraser's ass.

It should be a priveledge to play your college basketball at MSG.
At least he knew that much.

Takes more than one person to have "rumors" is all I'm saying.

It’s just the rambling of one semi-senile, disgruntled poster who finally realizes that Norm Roberts is not going any where! His “sources” are the janitors at the Dean Dome, as if they would be privy to such privileged information.

Mentioned by the same basketball insider who predicted SJ would be 27 and 3 last year and that Norm could have signed John Wall if only he weren't too lazy to pick up the phone and call.

RSHF - do you truly believe norm will survive this debacle?

Peter has it right - unless monasch convinced others to let norm stay, or mullin is interested, then why would monasch be on the chopping block?

Yes, I think they are going to let him coach his seniors.
We'll see...

You're a SJ basketball fan. Harrington is not. Instead of looking at it from your perspective, look at it from his. How much worse can the situation get if Norm is retained? Can the team play worse? No. Can the fan base be more dissatisfied? No. Can attendance go down? No. Are there in fact any consequences from keeping Norm other than the occasional paragraph in the back of the Post? Not really. Missing hypothetical revenue increases, hypothetical protests on Brandon Tierney day, 20 people half heartedly chanting Norm must go at the DePaul game, those are not really consequences. So if the worst of the damage is long done and to reverse it Harrington has to admit that he made an error in hiring, retaining, and extending Norm, and if the possible consequences of admitting the error and rectifying it is a front page story in the NY Times about Grady Reynolds and Elijah Ingram's heroic cellphone, what does he really have to lose.

I am the same person that said where Harrison Barnes was going when the best insiders didnt know..I posted it and took the shots..I was the one who said Cutcliffe was not leaving Duke..I was the one that said ND football would suck before the season started, and the coach was gone. The same person that said if Norm attempted to get Wall he had a shot.you are what we call a second hand no-nothing.Do you know what business Mrs.Wall owns?? Do you know where his family is located? then I suggest you hush..Calipari was not in the picture for Wall while he was at Memphis...Wall was hoping and waiting on Roy...Roy was not going to offer him...He didnt want to play in Memphis.Didnt want to go to state.Duke a no-no..Ask your boy Kob if he called him?? I am also the person that said CJ leslie was not going to UNC, DUke or NC state.I also suggested to KOB that Norm should go get him...Norm doesnt recruit outside the area.CJ Leslie may end up with Calipari now.But there was a window...If you dont pick up the phone, it aint gonna happen.instead Norm goes after the Stiths of the world.CJ another kid with family in the NYC area. There is another superstar in the making at word of god...but you wouldnt know that cause your a second hand no-nothing.

Foad, ok I'm harrington.  Bball used to make more money.  Why not fire norm, hire another mid major who isn't that hot. Give him a shot to see if he can do better than norm. Surely can't do worse. If I'm fh, I hire cluess willard or pecora.  But norm is gone.

SJ don't play.  You said duke should go after leslie after we lost barnes. Don't sit here and say now you said all along he wouldn't go to duke.

Its too bad norm didn't call harrison barnes.  I heard he really likes jamaica and woulda come.  If only norm had called...

You're saying ok I'm Harrington and then analyzing the situation as yourself. You spend your days posting on these boards and thinking about the basketball team. For FH, the less he thinks about the BB team the better. The reality for Harrington is that he has a coach under contract until 2015 or something. You have Norm's replacement lined up, whereas Harrington doesn't even know who Tim Cluess or Kevin Willard are. As for the money, you have no idea whether basketball used to make money then or how much or whether it would make money now or how much. SJ already spends more (about 5 million) on the basketball team than Notre Dame spends and nearly as much as Pitt (5.5m) and Nova (6m). Merely increasing the coaches salary by a million a year would require an increase in sales of 20 thousand tickets at $50 per ticket to break even - and that's without the additional expenses, personnel, security, advertising, utilities, maintenance, insurance - for a program that has an average attendance of 4 or 5 thousand per game. Posters think that they're the only ones who realize that 'basketball is big business' - that the president of a university who runs 10 or 15 sports programs doesn't realize it and hasn't had the numbers crunched and hasn't already done a cost benefit analysis.

I said before barnes announced for UNC that K should go after Leslie...He hasn't.These kids dont want to play for Sidney...They want to play in a big conference..Both have ties to NYC..Cal wasnt hot after Leslie, but Leslie is looking for a home..This kid is way better than anyone on our roster currently.
