Big East Midpoint: Team + Individual Stats [JohnnyJungle.com]
« on: February 05, 2010, 03:02:12 PM »
The halfway point of the Big East season has not delivered on the promise the players and coaching staff had in the non-conference season, where the team ran out to a 9-2 record.  There were warts then – an inability to close out weaker opponents, and inconsistent post and point guard play.  It seemed that the Red Storm only turned it on when they had to.

At 12-9 overall, and 2-7 in Big East play, the chance for any kind of postseason – and a winning record – seem to have slipped away.  The second half of the season has some home games against struggling teams, and road contests against improved South Florida and DePaul squads.  The team might be able to pull out some wins, but right now, the numbers show a whole lot of struggle to score.

Below are tables on the Red Storm’s team performance and player-by player stats.  Read, discuss on the message board, and comment on what the team needs to do to close out a once-promising season in a  respectable manner.

Thanks Peter. Great job.  It boggles my mind that our 3 year starting pg averages 1 ppg. That is all.

  Fire Norm!

Good job Pete. Now using 50% Pete's stats, 50% what I have seen by watching the games on TV, 50% what the chuckleheads on these sites post and 50% whatever pops into my head, here are the BE midway point grades.
NOTE- yes it equals 200%. So what! This is a program that has employed Norm for 6 years so why should I have to make any sense!

Coker-Sometimes shows promise of being an adequate backup BE Center. Most times looks as if he is auditioning for the role of Bernie in "Weekend at Bernie's"
Grade D

Burrell-leads the nation in posts about him. Has talent, but looks more lost than Jack, Kate or Sawyer. Sorry Kob
Grade F

Evans-plays like a 16 year old kid having sex. Goes at it real hard, doesn't know what he is doing and makes a lot of mistakes.
Grade C-

Kennedy-second banana posing as the teams star. Would have fit in real nicely on Elite 8 team IMO. Inconsistent jumper only negative.
Grade A

Horne-Carmine's favorite player having a disastrous season. Shooting  Shaq like 50% from the line. Unacceptable from a team's shooting guard. Becuase of very good soph season, all the "experts" on these boards overated him. I thought he would be an excellent third guard or a poor man's David Wingate. Let his offensive problems affect his D. He is better than this!
Grade F

Hardy-Team's best offensive weapon. Sort of like saying Moe was the smartest Stooge. I think on this offensive starved team he was overated by everyone including WE ARE NOSTRADAMUS. Has real god scoring ability and a nice shot. Along with DJ should be the focal point of offense. So naturally he only plays around 20 minutes
Gade B

Mason jr- Give the kid credit came back from a lot of injuries and bad luck and has not gone back to his previous chucking ways. Unfortunately the time away and rust seems to have taken away a lot of his athletic ability.
Grade C-

Brownlee-I like his game and he should also play more, even though he is inconsistent. Probably needs an intervention so he will stop taking threes.
Grade C

Thomas- Kid is a TV movie waiting to happen. Too bad his skills have eroded to the point they are at now.
Grade INC

Boothe- Team is lost against the press w/o him. Also gets points for not being Geno. Now the negatives. Outside of being the best dribbler on the team he is pretty useless. Also gets points taken off for leaving his best friend Dudley to get molested by that WKRP guy.
Grade F

Stith-sometimes I think he is better than Boothe. Sometimes I think he is worse. Either way is not good.
Grade F

Norm-What can we say. The man has managed to do the same exact thing for 6 years despite truly awful results. Every criticism and joke has been exhausted already.
Grade F

Grade F

Kennedy's averaging 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in 32 minutes per game.

Burrell's averaging 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist in 17 minutes a game.

Half as many stats in half as many minutes.

Obviously he's been disappointing, but how is one a A and one an F?

I was probably hard on Burrell, but he is so much better than this. In his sleep he should at least do what Evans does stat wise. In fairness if I had not seen him play as a freshman he would probably rate a C minus.

Horne and Burrell's numbers surprised me.  Better than I thought, actually.

Top 5 reasons we stink:
1. Norm
2. Norm
3. Point guard play
4. Burrell's play
5. Horne's play

if paris and evans played like they did last year, dj and boothe played like they have this year, and if jb played half as well as he could/should we would be very competative.

We need to work on our free throw defense which is ranked 15th.

I like it when the two guys closest to the shooter put there hands up and out while the guy is shooting or move into the lane nice and early to distract him.

What does Dele Coker and Justin Burrell have to do in order to earn more minutes?

They are #1 and #2 in FG%

They are #1 and #2 in Blocked shots per 40.

Both can hit midrange shots better than our guards can.

What gives?
